Holland America Plans Lido Pool Bandstands for Two Ships

The move shows how premium cruise lines are reworking older ships into more active social spaces as live entertainment becomes a bigger part of the onboard experience.

Holland America Line is adding permanent performance bandstands at the Lido Pool on Oosterdam and Zuiderdam, expanding live music options on the two ships as part of its Holland America Evolution upgrade program.

The new pool-deck venues are designed to support performances ranging from soloists to full bands, while also serving as staging areas for shipwide events such as sailaway parties and the cruise line’s Dutch-themed Orange Party.

How the new Lido Pool bandstands are expected to be used

Holland America said the bandstands will create dedicated stages on the Lido Pool deck aboard Oosterdam and Zuiderdam, two 82,305-gross-ton ships. Both vessels have retractable glass roofs over the Lido Pool area, a design feature that can help keep entertainment programming in place when weather conditions might otherwise move events indoors.

Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, connected the addition to the brand’s wider focus on expanding entertainment. “The new Lido Pool bandstands are another step in that effort,” Bodensteiner said, describing the goal as creating more opportunities for live music in one of the ship’s most-used public spaces.

Across a typical sailing, Holland America expects the bandstands to serve multiple functions, including:

  • Scheduled live music: The stages are intended for regular performances, from solo artists to full bands, in a high-traffic area of the ship.
  • Sailaway programming: Holland America expects the bandstands to support departure-day events, when pool-deck gatherings often draw larger crowds.
  • Orange Party events: The venues are planned as part of the onboard setup for the line’s Dutch-themed Orange Party programming.
  • Select shipwide celebrations: Holland America said the stages can also act as central gathering points for certain onboard festivities beyond the standard music schedule.

When Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are scheduled to debut the new stages

Holland America plans for Oosterdam to be the first ship to debut the new Lido Pool bandstand following its Evolution transformation in fall 2027. Zuiderdam is scheduled to follow later, with post-renovation sailings already on sale beginning April 2, 2028.

Holland America has also moved up Oosterdam’s Evolution refurbishment timeline, a shift that changed parts of the ship’s late-2027 schedule.

What Holland America Evolution covers across the fleet

The bandstands are part of Holland America Evolution, a multi-ship modernization plan spanning six Vista Class and Signature Class vessels. Holland America has put the overall investment at more than $500 million, with updates ranging from public-area refreshes to changes in dining, entertainment, and accommodations.

Holland America has identified six ships in the Evolution program: Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, Noordam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Eurodam. While the company has not provided a ship-by-ship checklist of every change across all six vessels, it has been announcing specific venue and design elements as dry-dock schedules advance.

Dining and lounge updates tied to the refits

Beyond the pool-deck stages, Holland America has said the Grand Dutch Café will be added to both Oosterdam and Zuiderdam. The counter-service venue offers Dutch-inspired snacks and beverages and has previously been available on Pinnacle Class ships.

Oosterdam’s Evolution work also includes a redesigned Ocean Bar concept with a refreshed layout and a performance stage intended to support more live music. Holland America has described the updated approach as drawing on Art Deco styling and the brand’s maritime heritage, while incorporating materials such as recycled-content upholstery as part of the redesign.

Michael Stendebach, senior vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line, said the Ocean Bar updates are meant to reflect “a sense of elegance and occasion,” while reinforcing the space as a gathering point for cocktails and live performances. Holland America’s planned programming for the venue includes Vivace Strings, pianists, and late-night cabaret performances.

New stateroom and suite categories planned

Holland America has also linked the Evolution upgrades to new accommodation options intended to broaden choice across the two ships. The line has identified additions that include Solo Verandahs for solo travelers, Bridgeview Suites, enhanced Vista Suites, and a reimagined Pinnacle Suite.

Zuiderdam is slated to follow Oosterdam into refurbishment, with its enhancements expected to debut by spring 2028. As the first two ships publicly tied to the new Lido Pool stages, Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are expected to provide the earliest look at how Holland America Evolution blends entertainment expansion with venue refreshes and updated room categories.
