Holland America Adds Poolside Stages to Oosterdam, Zuiderdam
Holland America is using entertainment-led refurbishments to narrow the gap between older ships and newer flagships as cruise lines compete on onboard experience.
Holland America Line plans to add dedicated live-music bandstands to the Lido Pool areas on Oosterdam and Zuiderdam as part of its Holland America Evolution upgrade program. The first poolside venue is expected to debut after Oosterdam completes its Evolution work in fall 2027, with Zuiderdam to follow.
Poolside stages expand live-music programming
Holland America said the new Lido Pool bandstands are designed as purpose-built performance spaces in one of the ships’ busiest public areas, reducing the need for temporary setups or multi-use venues. Programming is expected to span different times of day, from solo musicians to full live bands.
The line also plans to use the new stages for entertainment connected to established onboard traditions, including its Orange Party. Holland America noted that the Lido Pool’s retractable glass roof will help keep music programming running “rain or shine.”
Evolution investment and what the program covers
The bandstands are part of Holland America Evolution, a fleetwide refresh initiative targeting six Vista Class and Signature Class ships. The cruise line has described Evolution as its largest fleet update in 153 years, backed by an investment of more than $500 million and intended to bring elements associated with its Pinnacle Class ships to more of the fleet.
- Entertainment-forward public spaces: New and reworked venues are intended to make live music more visible across high-traffic areas, including the Lido Pool and select lounges.
- Venue and layout changes: The program includes updates to onboard amenities and reconfigured spaces designed to support how guests use key gathering spots throughout the day and evening.
- Additional accommodations: Holland America has said the Evolution work includes adding staterooms and suites, along with new stateroom and suite categories on ships receiving the upgrades.
Leadership emphasis on guest feedback and fleet consistency
Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, framed the new poolside stages as part of a broader effort to expand entertainment options while standardizing upgrades across multiple ships.
“Evolution is about bringing the very best of Holland America Line to more of our fleet,” Bodensteiner said, adding that guest feedback has helped guide efforts to expand live music. She said the Lido Pool bandstands are meant to create more opportunities for performances in a central gathering place on board.
Ocean Bar redesign adds a dedicated performance stage
Alongside the Lido Pool changes, Holland America has highlighted a redesigned Ocean Bar concept planned for Oosterdam. The company has described the reimagined venue as combining Art Deco design cues with maritime elements tied to the brand’s heritage, with a revised layout intended to support more live music.
Michael Stendebach, senior vice president of the food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line, said the goal was to create a venue where “guests can gather for a cocktail, enjoy live music and immerse themselves” in design elements informed by the brand’s maritime heritage.
Holland America has said the updated Ocean Bar will include a new performance stage and a relocated bar, along with refreshed seating intended to bring guests closer to the entertainment. Programming cited for the venue includes Vivace Strings, pianists, solo performers, and late-night cabaret acts.
First ships in line: Oosterdam and Zuiderdam
Oosterdam and Zuiderdam are the first two ships slated to receive Evolution updates. In addition to the entertainment venues, Holland America has said guests sailing after the transformations will see other changes, including the Grand Dutch Cafe and new stateroom and suite categories.
For Oosterdam, Holland America has also adjusted elements of its refurbishment planning, a change the line previously outlined in an earlier update on the ship’s Evolution refurbishment schedule.
Booking and what to watch next
Holland America has said bookings are open for sailings after Oosterdam’s and Zuiderdam’s refurbishments. The next key milestone for the program will be Oosterdam’s return to service following its Evolution work in fall 2027, before Zuiderdam enters its own transformation phase.
