AIDA Cruises Opens Innovation Hub for Decarbonization and AI

As climate rules tighten, cruise operators are courting start-ups and universities to find workable low-carbon and digital solutions, turning innovation into a new battleground.

AIDA Cruises has opened submissions for a new Innovation Hub as part of a wider slate of activities marking the cruise line’s 30th anniversary. The company said the program is designed to draw ideas from start-ups, universities and other companies, with winning concepts moving forward for development work alongside AIDA.

Innovation Hub targets decarbonization, sustainability and AI tools

AIDA said it is accepting Innovation Hub applications in three theme areas: decarbonization, sustainability, and artificial intelligence and smart tools. Finalists will be invited to present their concepts to an expert jury, with one winner selected in each category.

AIDA named the following experts for the jury evaluating the finalist presentations:

  • Professor Dr. Meike Jipp, Head of Energy and Transport at the German Aerospace Center, who is slated to help assess proposals tied to future energy and transport requirements.
  • Anisa Rizvanolli, Team Leader of Maritime Scientific Computing and Optimization at Fraunhofer CML, whose work focuses on maritime optimization and related technical applications.
  • Professor Dr. Ali Arnaout, Head of the International Management program at Wismar University of Applied Sciences, who will also be part of the judging panel.

Entries are being accepted through AIDA’s website, and the company said winners will be able to continue developing their ideas together with AIDA.

Hamburg: June 7 parade on the Elbe with three ships

The first major anniversary gathering is planned for June 7, 2026, when AIDAsol, AIDAperla and AIDAprima are scheduled to meet in Hamburg for a parade on the Elbe.

AIDA also released additional scheduling details around that Hamburg period, including AIDAperla arriving on June 6, 2026, for an overnight stay ahead of the June 7 parade. AIDAsol is scheduled to dock at the Altona cruise terminal on June 7, while AIDAprima is slated to arrive that evening.

Festival appearances in Kiel and Warnemünde

AIDA’s anniversary calendar also includes Kiel Week on June 20, 2026, where AIDAnova is expected to be featured.

The cruise line said the weekend includes three ship visits and activity across two Hamburg cruise centers.

Planned ship calls and berth times during May 8–10

  • May 8, 2026: AIDAluna is scheduled to call at Altona from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the Port of Hamburg anniversary weekend.
  • May 9, 2026: AIDAperla is slated to berth at Steinwerder from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., giving the ship a longer call window than the other two visits.

For the same May weekend, AIDA said it will set up a 400-square-meter “AIDA Urlaubswelt” area next to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The company said the onshore activation will include a place to relax with harbor views, a replica of an AIDAcosma show cabin, interactive elements, and an AIDA Lounge with live music.

AIDA is also linking its anniversary year to a milestone in its Cruise & Help initiative, which the company said has supported education projects in emerging and developing countries since 2019. AIDA said it will fund the program’s 100th school project: a new primary school in Mulando, Zambia, planned to serve around 160 children.

AIDA President Felix Eichhorn credited the milestone to participation across the company’s wider community. “AIDA guests, crew, partners, and friends have achieved something remarkable together in just six years,” Eichhorn said, adding that the 100th project builds on earlier work that began with a small preschool in the Philippines.

Havkost highlighted several itinerary notes and longer-range planning items, including AIDAblu’s Eastern Mediterranean summer program in 2026 with new calls in Zakynthos and Bodrum, as well as AIDAstella’s planned Asia and Australia season in 2026–27. AIDA also outlined winter cruise options that include sailings to the Canary Islands, South America and the Caribbean.

Looking further out, AIDA said it will begin visiting Carnival Corporation’s new Celebration Key in the Bahamas in November 2027. Havkost also said AIDA’s Japan program introduced in spring 2025 performed well and is scheduled to return in 2027.

As AIDA evaluates ports, Havkost said the company assesses infrastructure, operating requirements, and guest experience, and also considers factors such as political stability and logistical capabilities. She added that AIDA evaluates fuel availability, port costs, and distances between ports to manage fuel consumption. “When evaluating an entirely new port, we conduct a thorough assessment,” Havkost said, describing a process that also considers guest satisfaction and projected revenue and includes coordination with port authorities on scheduling.

Havkost said the company is already considering winter 2028–29 and thinking about where to deploy newbuilds planned for 2030 and 2031, with additional capacity expanding destination options.
