Port Samana to Open With MSC Opera in November 2026
Port Samana is separate from Samana Bayport in Santa Bárbara de Samaná, where a floating pier berths one ship and two more can use anchorage and tenders.
Port Samana at Arroyo Barril on the Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula is scheduled to begin operations on November 24, 2026, with MSC Cruises’ MSC Opera as its first caller. The terminal projects approximately 10,000 passengers during the remaining weeks of the year.
The opening adds a dedicated cruise facility to a destination where much of the cruise business has historically relied on tenders. Port Samana is separate from Samana Bayport, another development in the province whose first phase is already operating.
Terminal management has confirmed the inaugural ship and expects three further cruise calls in December to complete the initial four-call schedule. The Dominican government and developer ITM Group had previously confirmed the opening date. The announcement did not include comment from a named executive.
The Arroyo Barril development is expected to generate about 1,000 direct jobs and more than 3,000 indirect positions as cruise activity grows. Dominican officials see the project as part of efforts to extend tourism development beyond established resort centers such as Punta Cana and Puerto Plata.
Samana’s visitor attractions include beaches, whale-watching, waterfalls and nature excursions. The terminal is expected to bring more passengers to the peninsula and could support additional shore-excursion services, transport operators, restaurants and other tourism businesses.
ITM’s other developments in the country include Taino Bay in Puerto Plata, a three-berth port designed to handle up to 14,000 passengers daily, and Port Cabo Rojo, which is planned to accommodate as many as four cruise ships simultaneously.
Samana Bayport sits in Santa Bárbara de Samaná. Its floating SeaWalk pier allows one ship to berth directly, while up to two additional vessels can use anchorage and tenders.
Port Samana’s operators plan further growth from 2027 as additional ships and itineraries add calls to the peninsula.
