Hero of the Seas to Debut The SpongeBob Musical at Sea
Hero floated out at Meyer Turku in Finland on September 4, where installation and finishing work on slides, decks and interior venues continues before sea trials.
Royal Caribbean has selected “The SpongeBob Musical” as the headline theater production aboard its forthcoming Hero of the Seas, scheduled to enter service in August 2027. The cruise line says it will be the musical’s first production at sea.
Announced on October 2, the production will adapt the Broadway musical based on Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants for the ship’s Royal Theater. The story follows SpongeBob and his friends as they attempt to save Bikini Bottom from an imminent volcanic eruption.
“Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with something for everyone,” said Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean’s vice president of entertainment. “‘The SpongeBob Musical’ delivers on that by bringing generations together through a story families know and love.”
Royal Caribbean has not disclosed the production’s running time or performance schedule. At the time of the announcement, the show had not been confirmed for any other ship.
Broadway adaptations across the Icon class
The original Broadway production earned 12 nominations at the 2018 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won the scenic design award for David Zinn’s work. Its music includes contributions from David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Steven Tyler and Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob.
Hero will be Royal Caribbean’s fourth Icon-class ship, and each vessel in the class carries a different headline theater production. Legend of the Seas features Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” while Star of the Seas stages “Back to the Future: The Musical.” Icon of the Seas introduced the line’s first shipboard production of “The Wizard of Oz” in 2024.
The line’s Broadway repertoire also extends beyond the Icon class, with “Mamma Mia!” aboard Allure of the Seas and “Hairspray” on Symphony of the Seas.
Hero’s debut moves up
Hero floated out at Meyer Turku in Finland on September 4 and is undergoing work at the yard’s outfitting pier. Construction includes installation and finishing work on slides, decks and interior venues before sea trials and delivery.
In an October 9 update, Royal Caribbean announced that the vessel would begin carrying passengers earlier than originally scheduled, attributing the change to construction progressing ahead of schedule. Its first departure is now set for August 1, 2027: a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale that includes Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
A second added voyage will leave Port Everglades on August 8 for a three-night Bahamas sailing that also visits the private destination. These departures precede the ship’s previously announced Miami program.
From PortMiami, Hero will operate seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Western routes include Cozumel, Mexico, and Roatan, Honduras; eastern routes include Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, and Philipsburg, St. Maarten. Every sailing will call at Perfect Day at CocoCay, and reservations are available for departures through spring 2028.
The ship’s onboard plans include eight neighborhoods, nine pools, the Category 6 waterpark and 28 dining venues. New accommodations include the three-level Ultimate Family Treehouse, with a rooftop terrace, whirlpool and a two-deck area designed for teenagers.
Guests booked on the previously scheduled August 11 debut will be contacted with options to move to either added departure or retain their existing reservation. Royal Caribbean has yet to release the full itinerary for the new opening cruise.
