Carnival Valor to Launch Year-Round Cruises From Mobile in 2027

Carnival Spirit’s final Mobile winter season includes a 14-night Carnival Journeys cruise departing January 17, 2027, roundtrip to Aruba, Curaçao and Jamaica.

Mobile’s biggest cruise upgrade is a year-round schedule

Mobile went without a cruise ship from late April until Carnival Spirit returned on October 24. That months-long gap is why I’d put year-round service ahead of ship size in Carnival’s plans for the Alabama port.

Spirit is back for its 2026-27 winter season, its last currently scheduled deployment from Mobile. In mid-May 2027, the larger Carnival Valor is due to introduce year-round service. For a homeport that has been watching its ship leave for Alaska each spring, keeping one through the summer is a useful change.

Valor will bring 2,980 double-occupancy berths, compared with Spirit’s 2,134. At 110,000 gross tons, it is also substantially larger than the 88,500-gross-ton Spirit, which entered service in 2001. Valor’s Mobile program will offer six- to 14-night Caribbean and Bahamas cruises.

The extra capacity matters. But the calendar is the more compelling part of this upgrade, particularly for the businesses ashore.

City and tourism officials welcomed Spirit back at the downtown Alabama Cruise Terminal. “It’s a really big deal, the impact that you make for our destination with our hotels, our restaurants, our attractions,” said David Clark, president and CEO of Visit Mobile. A year-round schedule gives those businesses a cruise season that no longer stops in spring.

For now, Spirit’s winter program is underway. Its first departure was a seven-night Bahamas and Florida cruise calling at Key West, Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key.

The season includes six- to 14-night sailings, with Bimini and Nassau among the destinations on shorter Bahamas itineraries. A 14-night Carnival Journeys cruise departing January 17, 2027, will sail roundtrip from Mobile to Eastern and Southern Caribbean destinations, including Aruba, Curacao, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica.

A difficult voyage to Mobile

Spirit’s return followed a repositioning cruise that lost both a night and most of its port calls.

Repairs during the ship’s preceding Hawaii cruise delayed its return to Seattle by nearly a day. That pushed the Mobile-bound departure from October 8 to October 9, shortening the planned 16-night voyage to 15 nights. Carnival did not disclose the nature of the repair issue.

The delayed departure forced the cancellation of Cabo San Lucas to preserve Spirit’s Panama Canal transit slot. Puntarenas, Costa Rica, was subsequently canceled as well, leaving Cartagena, Colombia, as the voyage’s only port call alongside the canal transit.

Captain Lorenzo Calogero told passengers the ship had taken a wider route around Hurricane Trudy. He said “strong opposite currents reduced our speed,” preventing Spirit from reaching Puntarenas within its required entry window.

Keeping the canal transit preserved an important part of the itinerary. But one port call in 15 nights left passengers little time ashore.

Carnival offered prorated refunds of fares and prepaid service packages for the shortened cruise, plus a $250 onboard credit per stateroom. Carnival-booked excursions at the canceled ports were refunded. The line also offered reimbursement of eligible travel-change expenses up to $200 per person and automatically adjusted flights booked through FLY2FUN.

The schedule is changing. The agreement still needs work.

Spirit is scheduled to leave Mobile in April for another Seattle-based Alaska season. It will operate from Tampa for winter 2027-28.

Valor’s arrival is therefore more than a ship swap. But Mobile is in the fourth year of its five-year agreement with Carnival, and Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said contract terms still need to be extended and negotiated.

“I have no doubt that with our partnership, that’s exactly what we’ll be able to do,” he said.

The year-round deployment is a concrete step forward. Getting the agreement extended should now take priority over celebrating the extra berths.
