Carnival Warns Scooter Users They May Be Denied Boarding

Carnival says guests bringing scooters wider than 21 inches or sharing a cabin with multiple devices must book fully accessible rooms, whose doorways are about 32 inches wide.

Carnival Cruise Line has warned mobility-scooter users that they risk being denied boarding if their equipment cannot fit inside their reserved staterooms. The reminder was sent to guests booked on Carnival Radiance’s November 8, 2026 departure, a 14-night Carnival Journeys voyage to Hawaii from Long Beach.

The scooter policy has not changed, and its requirements are not limited to longer cruises. Guests received the emails roughly two weeks before embarkation, giving them time to arrange alternative equipment if their scooter is unsuitable for their accommodation.

Scooters will be measured at check-in. Guests whose devices do not fit must arrange a smaller rental or travel without one; otherwise, the email warns, boarding will be refused and “no compensation will be provided.”

Fitting the scooter to the stateroom

Scooters must be kept inside staterooms, not in corridors or public spaces. Carnival also requires scooters and their batteries to be charged in the cabin, and equipment must be positioned so occupants can safely leave the room.

Guests sharing a stateroom with more than one scooter must book fully accessible accommodation. The same requirement applies to passengers bringing a scooter wider than 21 inches. Standard and ambulatory-accessible cabins have 22-inch doorways, while fully accessible rooms have doorways approximately 32 inches wide.

Clearing the doorway is not the only test. The device also has to fit safely within the cabin.

Carnival asks passengers to disclose mobility-device needs when booking and complete its online Mobility Devices Form as early as possible. The form requests information about the equipment type, its power source, the guest’s mobility level and the category of stateroom booked.

Passengers seeking confirmation that their equipment is compatible with their cabin can contact Carnival Guest Access at 1-800-438-6744, extension 70025, or access@carnival.com.

Rentals, assistance and devices left aboard

Carnival encourages passengers who regularly need mobility equipment to bring their own or rent through its preferred supplier, Scootaround. Shipboard wheelchairs are reserved for emergencies, not routine personal use.

Wheelchair assistance is available for embarkation and debarkation at the home port, but is not generally provided during the voyage or at ports of call.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald explained in September 2025 that crew members can carry a scooter onto a tender, but cannot do so while a guest remains seated on it. His response followed a passenger’s complaint during a cruise to Belize.

The pre-cruise email also covers early departures. Guests who disembark before a sailing ends without their scooter or another mobility device are responsible for arranging its return shipment and paying the associated costs.
