Wärtsilä Signs Eight-Year Deal for Carnival LNG Cruise Ships
Shore monitoring and condition-based maintenance are part of the scope, with Wärtsilä also tying performance targets to fewer unplanned stops.
Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation have entered an eight-year lifecycle agreement for four LNG-fueled cruise ships across Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line, including two vessels still under construction. It is the first service contract between the companies for Carnival Corporation cruise ships powered by LNG.
The contract covers long-term performance support for Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines and related equipment. Wärtsilä booked the order in Q2 2026.
Performance-based support for dual-fuel engines
Under the contract, Wärtsilä will support the covered vessels through scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, major engine overhauls, spare-parts logistics, advisory work and crew training. The scope also includes monitoring from shore, condition-based maintenance, technical audits, performance reviews and KPI-based performance management.
Vera Lannek, vice president of strategic sourcing and asset management at Carnival Corporation, said the agreement supports Carnival’s priorities around “operational excellence, sustainability and delivering a world-class guest experience.” She said the long-term lifecycle agreement would help Carnival “further strengthen the performance of the covered vessels.”
The performance framework sets measurable operating targets, including lower unscheduled maintenance costs and fewer unplanned stops. The companies also cited vessel availability, fleet reliability and total cost of ownership as objectives of the agreement.
Andrea Morgante, Wärtsilä’s vice president of performance services, said the contract extends the companies’ existing relationship and shows a “shared focus on ensuring high-performing cruise operations through proactive lifecycle support, data-driven insight and close technical collaboration.”
Where the agreement fits in Carnival’s LNG fleet
As of November 2025, Carnival Corporation operated 11 LNG-powered cruise ships and had six more LNG-capable vessels on order for delivery through 2033.
Carnival Cruise Line’s LNG ships include Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, while Princess Cruises introduced Sun Princess in 2024 as its first LNG-powered vessel. Carnival Cruise Line’s order book also includes three 230,000-GT LNG ships ordered from Fincantieri for 2029, 2031 and 2033, which would bring the brand to eight LNG ships by 2033.
The companies did not identify the individual vessels covered by the lifecycle agreement, the brand-by-brand split, the specific engine models or the contract value.
