Royal Caribbean Names Six Artists for Legend of the Seas
The line received two hundred fifty applications, with final pieces set for shipboard spaces from the Royal Promenade to the Suite Sundeck and guest boarding area.
Royal Caribbean has selected six artists from the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America to create original artwork for Legend of the Seas, the line’s third Icon Class ship scheduled to enter service in July 2026. The commissions, part of the Artist Discovery Program, will be installed in six passenger-facing areas including the Royal Promenade, embarkation zone, Suite Sundeck and guest boarding area.
Royal Caribbean first ran the program on Icon of the Seas and later on Star of the Seas. The line received 250 applications. Each included a personal statement, resume and unpublished concept artwork, and Royal Caribbean awarded grants to the final six for pieces inspired by their home countries.
“With Legend of the Seas we’ve expanded our call for talent beyond the Caribbean to include Mexico and Central America,” said Jay Schneider, chief product innovation officer, Royal Caribbean, “bringing together an even broader range of voices and perspectives.”
Royal Caribbean has also applied the program ashore at Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau, where 11 Bahamian artists are featured across 25 locations at the all-inclusive beach club. For Legend, the shipboard collection includes large-scale murals along with a ceramic mosaic sculpture and a stainless-steel structure.
Where the artwork will appear
- Giovanni Abath of Curacao will create a large-scale mural and stainless-steel sculpture at the Royal Promenade entrance on deck six.
- Vanessa Dalla Costa of Trinidad and Tobago will produce a ceramic mosaic sculpture for the Suite Sundeck.
- Porschia Denning of the U.S. Virgin Islands will create a mural for the Suite Sundeck Lobby.
- Rafeal Vega Feliciano of Puerto Rico will produce a mural for the guest boarding area on deck two, where passengers leave and return to the ship during port calls.
- Rodrigo Macias Maldonado of Mexico will design a large-scale mural for the Royal Promenade.
- Alexander Lopez Ryliouk of Costa Rica will create a large-scale mural for the embarkation area.
Legend is moving toward its first sailings
The commissions come as Royal Caribbean readies Legend of the Seas for service. The ship was delivered on June 10 and is scheduled for its first guest voyage on July 4 from Civitavecchia.
