PortMiami Adds Traffic Measures as Cruise Crowds Reach New Highs

Passengers heading to terminals AA, A, B, C and D are being directed through the PortMiami Tunnel; those using terminals E, F, G, J and V should use the bridge.

PortMiami expects 81 days during its 2026-27 cruise season when seven to 10 ships will be docked simultaneously. December will be particularly busy, with nine or 10 vessels scheduled together on more than 10 days.

Weekends are expected to bring the heaviest passenger volumes, with calls by ships including Royal Caribbean’s 5,610-guest Icon of the Seas and MSC Cruises’ 5,400-passenger MSC World America. On an exceptionally busy day with 10 ships, the port can process more than 75,000 passengers over 12 hours.

PortMiami handled 8,564,151 cruise passengers in fiscal 2025, up from 8,233,056 in fiscal 2024. In September 2026, it welcomed its 10-millionth passenger of that fiscal year, exceeding the previous annual record before the year ended.

Alongside the ship arrivals, the port is introducing and expanding traffic measures covering terminal access, airport transfers, congestion monitoring and law-enforcement support around downtown Miami.

New to Miami this season

Margaritaville at Sea’s Beachcomber is scheduled to make its global debut from Miami in January 2027. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Firenze will reposition from the West Coast for a seasonal Miami program running from February through mid-May.

Two newbuilds will also begin service from the port: Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Aura in June and Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas in August.

Among the maiden calls, Ponant Explorations’ L’Austral and Explora Journeys’ Explora III are scheduled for October 2026. November brings The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Ilma, Emerald Cruises’ Emerald Sakara and Orient Express Sailing Yachts’ Orient Express Corinthian.

Four Seasons Yachts’ Four Seasons I and Azamara Quest are scheduled to arrive in December. Silversea’s arrivals extend across several months: Silver Shadow in November, Silver Dawn and Silver Ray in December, Silver Nova in January and Silver Spirit in February.

Getting passengers to the ship

Miami-Dade County announced the traffic initiatives on October 16, 2026. They were developed with cruise lines, transportation providers, government agencies and community organizations.

“These improvements help us reduce congestion, enhance safety and strengthen the overall journey from curb to cruise,” said Jonathan Daniels, PortMiami director and CEO.

Passengers heading to terminals AA, A, B, C and D are being directed through the PortMiami Tunnel. Those using terminals E, F, G, J and V should enter via the PortMiami Bridge. The port is also asking passengers to use their ship’s assigned parking garage or surface lot and arrive only at their scheduled embarkation time.

Transportation providers have separate staging instructions. Taxis serving the area opposite Terminal C should enter through the tunnel and wait in Lot 1; those serving the staging area opposite Terminal E should use the bridge and Lot 2. Rideshare vehicles and passenger motor carriers accessing their staging areas should use the tunnel.

PortMiami will continue its work with GridMatrix under the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority’s Public Innovation Challenge pilot. The project uses AI-powered computer vision to monitor congestion, with the aim of anticipating bottlenecks and informing traffic-management decisions.

PortMiami personnel, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the City of Miami Police Department will assist with traffic on Biscayne Boulevard and nearby downtown streets on selected dates. Cargo roadways will also continue to serve as alternative routes to reduce pressure on downtown roads and highways, including I-395.

A pilot with Carnival Cruise Line begins in October 2026, offering complimentary transfers to Miami International Airport for Carnival Celebration passengers on selected dates. Royal Caribbean Group’s existing complimentary airport shuttle program for Icon of the Seas passengers will also continue on selected dates.

The passenger-information campaign will include two videos, “Arrive at Your Embarkation Time” and “Choosing the Right Entrance,” distributed through the port’s social media channels and those of its partners. PortMiami has not announced when the videos will be released.
