Holland America to Upgrade Zuiderdam in $500M Evolution Program
The six-ship effort extends Pinnacle-class accommodations and venues to Vista-class ships as well as Signature-class Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.

Holland America Line will put Zuiderdam through the second vessel upgrade in its $500 million Holland America Evolution program, adding new suite categories, 32 solo verandah staterooms and a Grand Dutch Cafe to the Vista-class ship. Zuiderdam is scheduled to enter drydock in late 2027, with upgraded features due to debut in spring 2028. Voyages on the enhanced Zuiderdam are scheduled to open for booking July 30, 2026.
Zuiderdam follows Oosterdam, which is scheduled to debut the first Evolution upgrades in late 2027, and bookings are open for Oosterdam's first post-refurbishment sailings. The six-ship initiative, which Holland America describes as the largest fleet update in its 153-year history, brings accommodations and venues associated with the line's Pinnacle-class ships to the Vista-class Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam, along with the Signature-class Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.
New accommodations lead the Zuiderdam work
The Zuiderdam plan includes a redesigned Pinnacle suite, two Bridgeview suites, 14 Vista suites and 32 solo verandah staterooms, along with refreshed accommodations across the ship. Holland America also released new renderings of the Bridgeview and Pinnacle suites.
The two Bridgeview suites will sit above the bridge, with forward views, wraparound windows, a balcony and separate living and sleeping areas. Each will measure 900 square feet. The Pinnacle suite, the largest accommodation on board, will be redesigned as a 1,550-square-foot space with broad living area, panoramic views, a powder room, a walk-in closet, a separate living room and a private balcony.
Solo verandahs will be designed for single occupancy and include a balcony and living space. Each will measure 200 square feet with a glass-walled shower and a dedicated workspace. The Vista suites, an accommodation type carried over from the Pinnacle-class ships, will include a sitting area, a verandah and floor-to-ceiling windows.
"We've seen strong interest in our Bridgeview Suites and Solo Verandahs on Oosterdam, and we're excited to make these new accommodations available on Zuiderdam," Holland America Line President Beth Bodensteiner said. "We're building on that momentum and look forward to sharing more details, including itineraries, very soon."
Grand Dutch Cafe expands to another class
Zuiderdam also will receive the Grand Dutch Cafe, an all-day gathering place inspired by cafes in Amsterdam and Northern Europe. The venue was previously tied to the line's Pinnacle-class ships and will make its Vista-class debut through the Evolution program.
On Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam, the cafe operates as an all-day casual venue with Dutch food items and chargeable specialty coffees, beers and spirits unless covered by a beverage package. Holland America said the Zuiderdam version will be the largest Grand Dutch Cafe introduced under the Evolution program.
Technical upgrades are part of the program
The Evolution program also includes technical work beyond the passenger-facing accommodations and venues. Speaking at an industry event earlier this year, Bodensteiner said the project will improve fleet efficiency and reduce overall environmental impact.
"Much of this work is focused on smarter power management and stronger system performance, all with the goal of reducing our consumption of energy," Bodensteiner said.
Holland America is also investing in propulsion, automation, structural maintenance and critical equipment. "Safe, reliable operations will always be at the heart of how we operate," Bodensteiner said.
The work is being carried out with Fincantieri, which built every vessel in Holland America's current fleet. "Fincantieri is our trusted partner for rebuilds and refits, and we are excited to partner with them again for Holland America Evolution," Bodensteiner said.
Built in 2002, the 82,300gt, 936-foot Zuiderdam carries roughly 1,900 passengers at double occupancy, with 985 cabins and a crew of about 817. The ship was refurbished in 2015 and 2017. Itineraries have not yet been released.
