Costa Serena Begins Farewell Asia Season Before South America Move
Before leaving Asia, Costa Serena will run two- to five-night cruises from Naha and Keelung, then dock in Nagoya to accommodate Games athletes.
Costa Cruises’ Costa Serena is operating its farewell season in Asia after more than a decade in the region, ahead of a redeployment that will put the ship into South America service. The 3,012-passenger, 114,500-gross-ton vessel is sailing from Naha, Japan, and Keelung, Taiwan, before a September Shanghai program and a late-October voyage from Tokyo to Buenos Aires.
The departure from Asia follows a late-2025 refit under Costa’s more than €200 million fleet revitalization program. Costa is also moving toward an eight-ship operating fleet by late 2026, and Costa Serena is expected to become the oldest ship remaining in the brand after Costa Fortuna leaves.
Asia program leads into Shanghai farewell
Current sailings from Naha and Keelung include two- to five-night cruises calling at Ishigaki, Keelung and Miyakojima. Longer itineraries expand the program to Nagasaki, Sasebo and Fukuoka in Japan, along with Busan and Yeosu in South Korea.
In Shanghai, Costa Serena will operate cruises between China and destinations in South Korea and Japan.
Before the Buenos Aires voyage, the ship is also scheduled to remain docked in Nagoya from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4, 2026, to accommodate athletes during the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and Para Games.
From Tokyo to Buenos Aires
The 65-night Tokyo-to-Buenos Aires world cruise is scheduled to sail via Australia, the South Pacific and South America. Calls include French Polynesia, and the itinerary includes an overnight stay at Bali in Indonesia.
After completing the repositioning itinerary, Costa Serena is scheduled to sail South America cruises from Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.
Refit and fleet changes
Costa Serena was built in 2007. The ship completed its refurbishment as part of a five-year revitalization program that began in 2021, with the work updating interiors and public areas in a pop-art-inspired design and adding a food court with specialty venues including Sushino@Costa and Pizzeria Pummid’Oro.
The refit also included redesigned pools and bars, renovated main restaurants and updated suites.
After the South America season, Costa Serena is due to reposition to Europe in early 2027 and take over the deployment currently operated by Costa Fortuna. The 2003-built Costa Fortuna was sold in 2025 and is scheduled to be handed over to Margaritaville at Sea in September.
