Carnival Tests Prepaid Gratuity Stickers on Guest Cards

Carnival recommends daily gratuities of $17 per guest in standard staterooms and $19 in suites, distributed among cabin, dining and behind-the-scenes crew.

Carnival should thank prepaid tippers without labeling their cards

A Carnival guest who lets the line charge daily gratuities onboard can pay the same recommended amount as someone who prepays. Only the prepaid guest qualifies for the “Crew Love” sticker Carnival is testing on Sail & Sign cards.

That is an unnecessary distinction to make visible. I’d keep the thank-you note that accompanies the sticker and leave the card alone. Paying before departure is a billing choice, not evidence that one passenger is more generous than another.

The pilot came into view through a passenger’s video from Carnival Panorama showing a sticker and a cabin thank-you note. Carnival says the program recognizes guests who prepay their daily gratuities and is collecting feedback as it evaluates the test.

Some passengers welcome the recognition. Others have raised concerns about privacy and whether visible prepaid status could affect service. On Cruise Critic’s forums, member PlanoTim questioned why that information could not appear electronically when a crew member scans the card.

Carnival responded to the service concern. “Our team members provide great service to every guest,” a spokesperson said, describing the stickers and notes as recognition for guests’ generosity.

There is no evidence here that the stickers have changed service. The objection is to the distinction Carnival has chosen to advertise.

The extra-tip complaint is a separate issue

The sticker discussion has overlapped with a complaint from a Carnival Venezia passenger about additional tipping prompts. These are two different issues, and combining them makes an already layered gratuity system harder to follow.

The passenger, identified as Tony, who posts on TikTok as @lalidoloca, said he had prepaid his daily gratuities and purchased a beverage package. He nevertheless received paper receipts with additional-gratuity lines after ordering at a coffee bar, a bar and the casino.

“In the casino last night, they’re carrying around a handheld where you can actually choose a gratuity before you sign your name,” Tony said.

His Sail & Sign card did not have a sticker, and he said his sailing appeared to be outside the pilot. In a follow-up email to BroBible, he clarified that additional tipping prompts after prepayment were not new. His account has not been independently verified, and BroBible contacted Carnival for comment.

Prepaying daily gratuities does not cover every service charge a passenger encounters. Carnival applies a separate 20% service charge to beverages, specialty dining and other paid food offerings. Anything tipped beyond that is optional. A blank gratuity line is an invitation to add more, not another amount the passenger owes.

What the daily gratuities actually cover

Carnival recommends daily gratuities of $17 per guest in standard staterooms and $19 in suites for passengers ages 2 and older. Guests can pay before departure or have those amounts automatically charged to their Sail & Sign accounts during the cruise.

That money is distributed among cabin attendants, dining personnel and crew working behind the scenes. Carnival says all daily gratuities go to the onboard team, on top of employees’ guaranteed compensation.

The separate service charges on drinks and paid dining go to employees who deliver and support those services. Those workers do not participate in the daily gratuity program. Carnival describes additional tips as a discretionary reward for service beyond what the service charge covers.

Passengers can review itemized statements at Sail & Sign kiosks, while the Carnival HUB app displays their account balance.

Carnival’s brand ambassador, John Heald, has said he plans to share more information about the sticker pilot, without specifying when. There is still room to rethink it.

Guests already have daily gratuities, purchase-specific service charges and optional extra tips to distinguish. Carnival should make that system easier to understand, rather than make the timing of one payment easier to spot.
