AmaWaterways’ AmaRudi Prioritizes Public Space on Danube Debut
AmaRudi, AmaWaterways’ second double-width vessel after AmaMagna, will have 98 staterooms, a dedicated entertainment venue and a full-sized pickleball court on its Sun Deck.
AmaWaterways is right to use AmaRudi’s extra width for public space
AmaWaterways’ next double-width Danube ship will use its extra width for public space rather than more accommodation. That is the decision I’d lead with in a year when river cruise operators have 21 new ships scheduled to enter service. More ships expand the choice. More room to enjoy being aboard gives passengers something tangible to choose.
The 196-guest AmaRudi is due in 2027, with 98 staterooms, expanded public areas, a dedicated entertainment venue and a full-sized pickleball court on the Sun Deck. It will be AmaWaterways’ second double-width vessel after AmaMagna, and will honor co-founder and chairman Rudi Schreiner.
I like the priority here. The pickleball court is an easy detail to put in a brochure, but the broader allocation of space is the stronger selling point.
AmaWaterways chief executive Catherine Powell confirmed the trade-off. “There will be more room to relax, more dining options, expanded wellness facilities and inviting public spaces,” she said.
A busy delivery year, with different approaches
AmaRudi is part of the 21-ship launch program announced by Cruise Lines International Association for 2027. The additions span the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine, Mekong and Amazon, as well as North American waterways, adding capacity on established European routes alongside investment in long-haul destinations.
CLIA UK & Ireland managing director Andy Harmer outlined the investment at an industry event on October 13, 2026, describing it as evidence of the sector’s breadth.
AmaWaterways’ other two additions serve different markets. AmaFiora will sail the Rhine with 76 staterooms, while the 60-stateroom AmaMaya will enter service on the Mekong. The deliveries form part of the company’s plan to operate more than 50 ships by 2032.
Celebrity Cruises makes its river debut with Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, each with 86 staterooms. Compass is scheduled to enter service in August 2027, and the company’s river program includes both the Rhine and Danube.
Celebrity is bringing familiar ocean-fleet venues aboard, including Cafe al Bacio, Martini Bar and Sunset Bar. Celebrity’s ocean guests will recognize the names. My preference is still for the less glamorous design question AmaRudi raises: how much space will guests have once they leave their rooms?
Celebrity Compass has already been floated out at Zwijnenburg shipyard in Rotterdam and transferred to TeamCo in Heusden for interior work. Celebrity plans to grow its river fleet to 20 vessels by 2031.
Other ships on CLIA’s 2027 schedule include Uniworld’s S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene and S.S. Sao Rafael, Emerald Cruises’ Emerald Lumi and Emerald Nova, and CroisiEurope’s RV Brasilian Dream.
Amadeus River Cruises expects delivery of AMADEUS Mira in spring 2027, following the introduction of Amadeus Aurea. Its next geographic expansion is planned for 2028, with a new vessel on Portugal’s Douro.
A broader audience needs more specific selling points
The expansion coincides with demand for long-haul river destinations, shorter sailings and immersive experiences. Solo travel is also generating demand for dedicated departures and accommodation choices.
Powell identified the Nile, Mekong, Chobe and Magdalena as particularly strong markets for AmaWaterways, although Europe remains its core business. She also reported more first-time, younger, multigenerational and solo travelers, alongside growth from the UK and Australia.
Amadeus executive vice president Marcus Leskovar described a similar broadening beyond the line’s traditional Baby Boomer audience to Generation X and younger guests. The company has introduced wine cruises on the Rhine and Danube.
Those differences give agents plenty to explain. CLIA, whose membership includes more than 70,000 travel trade advisers, is expanding river-cruise training through its Week on the Rivers webinar series. Its RiverView conference in March 2027 will include a two-night sailing from Budapest to Vienna, giving agents direct experience of the product.
With this many launches, “new for 2027” is a crowded sales pitch. AmaRudi’s decision to give more of its width to shared spaces offers a much better answer to the passenger asking why they should book that particular ship.
