AIDA Cruises’ AIDAbella returned to service in Palma de Mallorca on March 11 after a seven-week refurbishment in Marseille, completing an extensive modernization as part of the cruise line’s AIDA Evolution program.

The shipyard period combined guest-facing updates with behind-the-scenes technical work aimed at lowering energy and water use. AIDA Cruises also tied the project to circular-economy efforts, highlighting large-scale reuse, recycling, and donations of removed materials.

What changed onboard during the AIDA Evolution refit

AIDA Cruises said the overhaul refreshed public spaces across the vessel, updated accommodations, and expanded a range of dining and activity options. The work also included structural changes and onboard upgrades intended to enhance the passenger experience.

New venues, refreshed public spaces, and premium areas

As part of the modernization, AIDA Cruises added and updated restaurants and introduced new bars with an upgraded service concept. The refit also created additional activity areas designed for families, while public rooms received a redesigned look.

In accommodations, AIDAbella’s existing cabins were redesigned and new suites were added. The ship also gained new access-controlled spaces, including the Sky Deck and the Rossini Lounge, expanding the vessel’s portfolio of exclusive areas.

Technical upgrades focused on lowering energy and water use

AIDA Cruises said a new reverse osmosis system will allow AIDAbella to produce more fresh water from seawater while using less energy. The company also cited broader adoption of LED lighting, further tuning of demand-driven climate control, and modernized galley and catering technology as measures intended to reduce energy and water consumption during operations.

The ship’s hull was also treated with a biocide-free coating designed to reduce fouling. AIDA Cruises said limiting marine growth on the hull can support lower fuel consumption over time.

Recycling, donations, and large-scale material refurbishment

AIDA Cruises said the refit incorporated circular-economy practices, including the donation of about 5,100 pieces of furniture to social organizations and the recycling of approximately 18 tons of aluminum from sun loungers and chairs.

The company also described a wide refurbishment scope for onboard soft goods and coverings, including roughly 45,000 square meters of carpet, 10,000 square meters of carpet underlay, 2,500 square meters of artificial turf, and more than 1,000 mattresses, which were refurbished for continued use.

In crew and reception areas, AIDAbella received a fully recyclable, allergy-friendly carpet made from Econyl yarn. AIDA Cruises said the yarn was produced using recycled material, including carpets previously used on AIDAdiva and AIDAluna.

First itinerary after the shipyard period

AIDAbella’s first voyage after returning to service is a seven-day roundtrip from Palma de Mallorca, with calls in Italy, France, and Spain and an overnight stay planned in Marseille.

  • Departure/return: Palma de Mallorca, for a seven-day roundtrip itinerary.
  • Italy: Civitavecchia (Rome) and La Spezia.
  • France: Marseille, with a scheduled overnight stay.

Smiling Star Awards held onboard on March 12

AIDA Cruises hosted its AIDA Smiling Star Awards onboard AIDAbella on March 12, shortly after the ship’s return to service. The company presented awards to sales partners across 12 categories, recognizing performance and collaboration within its distribution network.

Uwe Mohr, Vice President of Sales at AIDA Cruises, said the dedicated award voyage is intended to support partner exchange and recognize agency work: “This special award voyage creates space for in-depth exchange, recognition and new ideas and is therefore a visible sign of appreciation for the daily work within our diverse agency landscape.”

AIDA Cruises said categories included Premium, New Customer Acquisition, and Best Digital Partnership, alongside new additions such as recognition for the most visually appealing shop window, the most attractive trade fair stand, and social media activities. The company said winners also toured the modernized ship and visited the Rossini gourmet restaurant.
