Virgin Voyages Leaves MNVV Refund Terms Unclear After Cancellation
The November 6 departure will be replaced by a four-night cruise to Catalina Island and Ensenada and a three-night Ensenada sailing, rather than its original weeklong itinerary.
Virgin’s Brilliant Lady Refund Offer Leaves an Important MNVV Question Unanswered
One Brilliant Lady passenger had booked two consecutive cruises, with My Next Virgin Voyage, or MNVV, benefits attached to each. Now both departures have changed, and the refund information shared with that passenger did not say whether the booking certificates would be restored.
I’d want that answer before choosing a refund. Virgin Voyages is protecting original fares and promotional benefits for eligible rebookings, which is the right response. But guests considering taking their money back also need to know what happens to the benefits they used to make the reservation.
The changes affect two departures from Los Angeles in fall 2027. Virgin has canceled Brilliant Lady’s seven-night October 30 Halloween cruise to accommodate a private charter. The ship had been scheduled to visit San Diego, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada before returning to Los Angeles.
Separately, Virgin is replacing the November 6 departure with two shorter cruises. Some passengers had booked the departures back-to-back, leaving them with changes to both halves of their planned trip.
Virgin has not publicly identified the charter customer or disclosed the arrangement’s details. In its notice to affected guests, the line said, “We know how much planning goes into a vacation like this,” adding that “we certainly don’t take this lightly.”
Fare protection is the useful part of the offer
Passengers on either affected departure can transfer to an eligible seven-night cruise from Los Angeles within the September 18–November 13, 2027, window. Virgin will preserve the fare paid and promotional benefits associated with the original reservation. Available Mexican Riviera itineraries during that period include destinations such as Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.
That protection carries more weight than the $100 onboard credit offered with a qualifying replacement booking.
The shorter replacements for November 6 are a four-night voyage visiting Catalina Island and Ensenada, and a three-night sailing calling only at Ensenada. The original weeklong itinerary included San Diego and an overnight stay in Cabo San Lucas. These are substantially different trips.
Passengers displaced from that departure can choose either shorter replacement and transfer money already paid to the new reservation. Guests choosing a qualifying weeklong replacement or one of the shorter alternatives will receive the $100 onboard credit.
Those who do not want a replacement can receive a full refund of their voyage fare through the original payment method.
When guests were notified, the shorter cruises were not yet displayed on Virgin’s website, although affected passengers received booking details directly. The canceled Halloween sailing was still visible online at that point, but attempts to book it led to an error page.
The certificate question needs a direct answer
The passenger, who posted on Reddit, said the bookings also carried a pay-in-full discount that was no longer offered, and questioned how those benefits would be handled after the changes.
Virgin’s current MNVV terms require passengers to purchase a placeholder onboard, then book and complete the future cruise within two years of the deposit date. The applicable benefits and conditions can depend on when the placeholder was purchased.
That makes the missing certificate information consequential. Virgin’s promise to preserve promotions on eligible rebookings is clear. The refund information shared with this passenger did not specify whether MNVV certificates would be restored.
There is no basis here to say those certificates will be lost. There is every reason to give affected passengers an explicit answer. They should not have to choose a refund while still guessing whether the certificate they used to book will be available to use again.
