Viking Plans 2030 River Voyages for Oberammergau Passion Play
The Bavarian village production traces its origin to a 1633 plague vow and was first performed at Pentecost in 1634; Viking has hosted guests there since 2010.
Viking has announced two 2030 European river voyages that combine preferred seating at the 43rd Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria with Rhine or Danube itineraries. Departures are scheduled from May through September 2030 for a 13-day Amsterdam-to-Munich program and a 12-day Oberammergau-to-Budapest program.
The village production is staged once a decade. The Oberammergau Passion Play traces its origin to a 1633 vow made during the bubonic plague and was first performed at Pentecost in 1634; the 2020 production was postponed to 2022 because of COVID-19.
“We have welcomed guests to the Oberammergau Passion Play for two previous installments and are pleased to introduce these new itineraries for 2030,” said Leah Talactac, president and CEO of Viking.
Viking said it has hosted guests at the event since 2010 and that its relationship with the Passion Play organizers lets it build the performance into its river itineraries years in advance.
Rhine and Danube programs built around Oberammergau
The 13-day Oberammergau, Innsbruck & the Rhine itinerary sails from Amsterdam to Munich. It includes the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Alsace, Innsbruck, the Oberammergau performance and an overnight stay in Munich.
The 12-day Oberammergau with Salzburg itinerary runs from Oberammergau to Budapest. The program combines time in Bavaria and Salzburg with a Danube sailing through Germany, Austria and Hungary; Viking identifies Salzburg in the itinerary as Mozart’s birthplace and a setting for The Sound of Music.
Both itineraries include sailings on Viking Longships, the company’s European river vessels.
Booking details released ahead of 2030 season
Viking has also created a dedicated Oberammergau webpage with background on the play and destination information for travelers considering the 2030 programs.
Through July 31, 2026, Viking’s Summer Sale for North American travelers includes reduced fares, up to free international airfare on select all-inclusive river, ocean and expedition itineraries, and a $25 deposit for all itineraries.
Starting fares for the 2030 Oberammergau programs, exact departure dates within the May-to-September window and specific Longship assignments were not included in the announcement.
