Viking Adds Third 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play River Itinerary

Viking has added a third 2030 river itinerary featuring the Oberammergau Passion Play, with more than 40 departures scheduled from May 11 through Sept. 28. The 11-day program starts at $11,295 per person based on twin occupancy.

Danube sailing followed by stays in Bavaria
The journey begins in Budapest and continues along the Danube through Vienna, Passau and Regensburg. Guests then spend two nights in Oberammergau before finishing with a two-night stay in Munich. Viking said additional shore excursions will be available alongside the included tours.
Viking named Viking Gullveig, Viking Egil, Viking Alruna and Viking Tialfi for the departures.
The itinerary joins two previously confirmed Viking journeys featuring the 2030 production: The Oberammergau, Innsbruck & the Rhine and Oberammergau with Salzburg. The announcement did not include an executive comment.
A tradition dating to 1634
The Oberammergau Passion Play began after villagers pledged in 1633 to stage a performance depicting the life and death of Jesus if the plague subsided. The first production followed in 1634, and a roughly once-a-decade schedule was established in 1680, with interruptions and exceptions over the subsequent centuries.
The most recent production ran from May 14 to Oct. 2, 2022. It had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
