Robert Downey Jr. Named Godparent of Disney Adventure
The ship began as the unfinished Global Dream before Disney acquired it in 2022 and redesigned it for Disney Cruise Line operations with seven themed areas.
Disney has named Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. godparent of Disney Adventure, its largest cruise ship, ahead of the vessel’s maiden voyage from Singapore in March 2026. Downey will christen the 208,108 GT ship, although Disney did not give a date for the ceremony.
Disney Adventure will be the first Disney Cruise Line ship homeported in Asia. It will operate from Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore under the cruise line’s long-term collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board.
“We are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company.
Disney’s largest ship prepares for service
Disney Adventure is approximately 1,124 feet long and has 19 decks, capacity for about 4,222 guests at double occupancy and space for as many as 6,700 passengers. The ship will carry approximately 2,300 crew members.
The vessel began as the unfinished Global Dream, which had been intended for a separate cruise project in Asia. Disney acquired it in 2022 and redesigned it for Disney Cruise Line operations and onboard programming.
The ship has seven themed areas, including several built around Marvel characters. Marvel Landing will feature Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship and, according to Disney, the longest attraction of its kind at sea.
Other Marvel programming includes the “Avengers Assemble!” open-air stage production in Disney Imagination Garden and the Marvel WEB Workshop in Disney’s Oceaneer Club. The ship also has character encounters, Broadway-style productions, themed accommodations and more than 20 dining and lounge venues with international and Asian-influenced menus.
Downey’s Marvel connection
Downey portrayed Tony Stark and Iron Man for more than a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including in “Avengers: Endgame,” which generated more than $2.79 billion at the global box office. Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2019, and he is scheduled to return to Marvel Studios as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday,” due in theaters Dec. 18.
“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor,” Downey said. “A gargantuan blessing must be bestowed ... I’ll do my darndest.”
Disney Cruise Line currently operates seven ships and plans to add six more by late 2030.
