PortMiami Adds AI Traffic Monitoring for Busy 2026-27 Cruise Season

Explora Journeys’ Explora III and Scenic Eclipse are scheduled to call in October 2026, followed by Norwegian Aura in June and Hero of the Seas in August 2027.

PortMiami is introducing new and expanded traffic measures ahead of a 2026-2027 cruise season that includes 81 days with seven to 10 ships scheduled to call. Miami-Dade County announced the package October 16, 2026, combining artificial intelligence-powered congestion monitoring, revised terminal access guidance and additional complimentary airport transfers.

Cruise passenger movements rose to 8,564,151 in fiscal 2025 from 8,233,056 a year earlier, an increase of about 4%; those totals count embarkations and disembarkations separately. By September 2026, the port had reached 10 million cruise passenger movements for that fiscal year, surpassing its previous annual record before year-end.

“These improvements help us reduce congestion, enhance safety and strengthen the overall journey from curb to cruise,” said PortMiami Director and CEO Jonathan Daniels.

Getting to the ship and back to the airport

A pilot developed with Carnival Cruise Line will begin in October 2026, providing Carnival Celebration passengers with complimentary transfers to Miami International Airport on select dates. PortMiami will also continue Royal Caribbean Group’s existing complimentary airport shuttle program for Icon of the Seas passengers, likewise available on select dates.

For passengers arriving by road, the recommended entrance depends on their departure terminal. Those using terminals AA, A, B, C and D should take the PortMiami Tunnel, while passengers departing from terminals E, F, G, J and V should use the PortMiami Bridge. Travelers should park in the garage or surface lot assigned to their ship.

Taxi drivers heading to the staging area opposite Terminal C should enter through the tunnel and use Lot 1. Those serving the staging area opposite Terminal E should take the bridge and use Lot 2. Rideshare vehicles and passenger motor carriers should use the tunnel to reach their staging areas.

PortMiami is coordinating passenger messaging with cruise lines, the tunnel operator, taxi and rideshare companies, and other transportation providers. It is asking passengers to arrive only during their assigned embarkation window.

Two planned videos, “Arrive at Your Embarkation Time” and “Choosing the Right Entrance,” will be distributed through the port’s social media accounts and those of its partners and stakeholders. PortMiami has not announced their release dates.

Keeping traffic moving

The port will continue working with GridMatrix, a winner of the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority’s Public Innovation Challenge pilot project, to monitor congestion using AI-powered computer vision. GridMatrix’s software can analyze existing camera and sensor feeds to measure vehicle volumes, queue lengths and travel times. Port officials intend to use the technology to anticipate bottlenecks and develop responses based on traffic data.

On select dates, personnel from PortMiami, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and the City of Miami Police Department will manage traffic along Biscayne Boulevard and in nearby downtown areas.

Cargo roadways will also remain available as alternative routes to relieve pressure on downtown streets and surrounding highways, including I-395. Coordination will continue with the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Miami, Kaseya Center and other downtown stakeholders.

Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, chairwoman of the Aviation and Seaport Committee, said efficient port operations are “essential for residents, visitors and businesses alike.” The measures were developed with government agencies, cruise operators, transportation providers and community organizations.

The season’s ship schedule includes Explora Journeys’ Explora III and Scenic Eclipse in October 2026. Later scheduled arrivals include Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Aura in June 2027 and Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas in August 2027.
