Oasis of the Seas Diverts to Halifax as Storm Josephine Nears

Oasis of the Seas, carrying about 5,000 passengers on a Florida and Bahamas itinerary, departed New Jersey Sunday and docked in Halifax on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Subtropical Storm Josephine is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland on Thursday and Friday, after disrupting a Royal Caribbean International cruise from New Jersey. Oasis of the Seas, carrying about 5,000 passengers on a voyage intended for Florida and the Bahamas, diverted to Halifax.

The ship departed Cape Liberty, New Jersey, on Sunday and docked in Halifax on Tuesday night and Wednesday. The diversion followed rain and heavy winds along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard earlier in the week as the weather system moved through the region.

Environment Canada has issued yellow rainfall warnings for parts of northern and eastern Nova Scotia on Thursday, with 50 to 70 millimetres of rain forecast.

Along Newfoundland’s south coast, wind warnings call for coastal gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour on Friday afternoon and evening.

Josephine began as a low-pressure system. It was off the U.S. Atlantic coast and moving northeast toward Atlantic Canada.
