Norwegian Aura Debut Moves to May 2 With Two New Cruises
The new 10-day opening sailing will depart Trieste for Piraeus, calling at Greek islands, Croatian ports and Bar, Montenegro, before a nine-day return voyage.
Norwegian Aura’s Earlier Debut Needs a Clear Answer for May 21 Guests
Norwegian Aura’s advertised May 21, 2027 maiden voyage is still going ahead. Under Norwegian Cruise Line’s revised plans, though, its passengers will watch two other groups sail on the ship before they do.
NCL has opened bookings for two additional Mediterranean departures, bringing Aura’s planned debut forward by 19 days to May 2. Both cruises depend on the anticipated early delivery of what will be the line’s largest and longest vessel.
I’d have put a clear policy for the original maiden-voyage guests alongside that booking announcement. NCL has not announced special arrangements for them or publicly indicated whether they can transfer their reservations. For anyone who chose May 21 specifically to be aboard first, the date change removes something that another week on the same ship cannot replace.
“The early delivery of Norwegian Aura allows us to welcome guests aboard sooner than expected,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. That explains the additional sailings. It leaves the existing passengers’ options unanswered.
Two longer Mediterranean cruises go on sale
The new opening voyage is a 10-day sailing from Trieste, Italy, to Piraeus, the port for Athens, departing May 2. Calls include Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos in Greece, Dubrovnik and Split in Croatia, and Bar in Montenegro.
The nine-day return voyage leaves Piraeus on May 12. It visits Rhodes, Mykonos, Santorini and Corfu, along with Split, Zadar and Bar, before reaching Trieste. Both sailings are longer than the previously announced seven-day maiden voyage.
Bookings for the added departures qualify for NCL’s Fall Flash Sale, which advertises a 50% cruise discount and up to $750 in onboard credit per stateroom for balcony accommodations and above. The offer can be combined with Free at Sea, whose benefits include an unlimited open bar, specialty restaurant meals, shore-excursion credits and Wi-Fi.
The original voyage has a port question, too
The May 21 seven-day Mediterranean cruise remains scheduled to visit Valletta, Malta, Salerno, Italy, and Civitavecchia, the port for Rome. NCL’s latest announcement names Barcelona as its endpoint and as the departure port for the subsequent 13-day Atlantic crossing to Miami.
That conflicts with a port change previously reported by Cruise Hive, which said the Mediterranean sailing would end in Tarragona and the crossing would embark there. It remains unclear whether the switch to Tarragona has been reversed. The distinction matters for passengers arranging transfers and accommodation around either sailing.
Aura’s scale and onboard plans
Aura is a Prima Plus-class vessel designed to carry 3,879 passengers at double occupancy. At approximately 170,000 gross tons and nearly 1,130 feet long, it will be about 10% larger than Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.
The ship floated out at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard in Italy in April. The booking announcement comes about six weeks after a fire aboard the vessel during construction.
Ocean Heights, its outdoor activity area, will span decks 18 through 21. The complex includes the 82-foot Aura Ropes Course, Moon Climber obstacle course, carnival-style games at Aura Midway, and designated spaces for children, teenagers and families. It also introduces Eclipse Racers, NCL’s first dueling mat-racing waterslides, and the Aura Free Fall body slide.
NCL says Aura will have its largest pool deck and Vibe Beach Club. Kazlauskas described the design as intended to bring families and travelers of different generations together, with more choices across entertainment, dining and wellness.
Dining additions include Tamara, the line’s first Indian specialty restaurant, and The Panorama Room, a complimentary venue with an immersive format. Mandara Spa will feature a Thermal Suite and a Sensory Rain Pool, which NCL describes as a first at sea.
The entertainment lineup includes “Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston,” created with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music. Other announced productions and events are The Vinyl Republic, Latin LIVE!, Aura FIRST NIGHT and “ILLUMINOX: Infinite Wonder Unboxed.”
Miami follows the European debut
From June through October 2027, Aura is scheduled to sail seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami. Calls include Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s private Bahamian island and home to its Great Tides Waterpark.
For winter 2027/28, the ship is scheduled to switch to seven-day Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Roatan, Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, and Harvest Caye, NCL’s resort-style destination in Belize.
There is plenty here for passengers choosing a cruise on the new ship. But the immediate job is more basic. Tell May 21 guests whether they can transfer to an earlier departure, and on what terms. Taking bookings for a replacement maiden voyage while leaving that publicly unresolved puts the new sale ahead of the existing guest.
