Natchez Breaks Ground on $5M Mississippi River Cruise Dock
Planned near Silver Street and the Under-the-Hill district close to downtown, the facility will include water and electrical service and public river access.
American Cruise Lines and the City of Natchez broke ground in September 2026 on a $5 million Mississippi River dock, the cruise line’s largest port infrastructure project to date. The riverfront facility is planned to accommodate as many as four river cruise vessels and provide water and electrical service.
The investment is intended to expand Natchez’s role from an itinerary stop into a homeport where passengers can begin and end cruises. City officials expect that shift to generate additional hotel stays, visitor spending and jobs.
A dock designed for homeport operations
The dock is planned for the riverfront near Silver Street and the Under-the-Hill district, close to downtown and the city’s historic attractions. Riverboats currently use the lower riverfront area, which has lacked a modern docking facility with the capacity and services included in the new project.
Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson said the city has worked toward homeport status for years. “We will be right there with New Orleans and Memphis as a city hosting overnight passengers coming in to embark on a cruise the next day,” Gibson said.
Gibson said the project could support tourism employment, although officials have not released specific job projections.
The facility will not be reserved exclusively for cruise operations. City officials said it is also being designed as a public river access point for residents and other visitors.
American Cruise Lines operates 30 ships on more than 50 domestic itineraries across 40 states. The company has called at Natchez since it began Mississippi River operations more than a decade ago.
“This is an investment in Natchez and in Mississippi River tourism,” American Cruise Lines President and CEO Charlie Robertson said. “We believe in the continued growth of tourism on the river.”
Robertson also said the cruise line is prepared to work with other communities between Louisiana and Minnesota on docks and related port infrastructure. He described Natchez and neighboring Vidalia, Louisiana, as central stops on the company’s lower Mississippi itineraries.
City prepares for more overnight visitors
The dock is part of a broader Natchez effort to support overnight tourism. The city has partnered with United Airlines and is redeveloping the historic Eola Hotel as a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, according to city officials.
The city has not announced when American Cruise Lines would begin cruises originating or ending in Natchez. A construction completion date has not been released either.
