Marella Discovery 2 to Go Adults-Only From Winter 2027
Marella Discovery 2's kids-only areas are slated to become new venues, including a speakeasy and escape room, for guests seventeen and older.
Adults-only cruising is gaining more capacity across multiple brands, led by Marella Cruises’ plan to make Marella Discovery 2 a permanent adults-only ship from winter 2027. The TUI Group line will have two adults-only ships in its five-vessel UK fleet, while Oceania Cruises, Ambassador Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line are also widening age-restricted products.
The expansion is taking several forms: whole-fleet policies, dedicated ships and selected casino-focused sailings.
Marella adds a second dedicated adults-only ship
Marella Discovery 2 will replace its kids-only areas with a speakeasy, escape room, karaoke room and arts and crafts space as part of the winter 2027 program. The ship is already scheduled for adults-only winter 2026 and summer 2027 seasons before returning in that format for a second consecutive winter.
“With demand for adults-only cruising continuing to grow, we’re investing in four new onboard concepts to enhance the experience even further,” Chris Hackney, chief executive officer of Marella Cruises, said.
Marella defines its adults-only product as for guests 17 and older. Marella Explorer 2, the line’s first dedicated adults-only ship, entered that role in 2019, while Marella Discovery is being sold as adults-only from Cyprus for summer 2026 before returning to family cruising for winter 2026-27.
The 69,472-GT Marella Discovery 2 was built in 1995 by Chantiers de l’Atlantique as Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas and joined Marella in 2017. The ship carries about 1,800 passengers at standard capacity.
From November 2027 through March 2028, Marella Discovery 2 will sail from Tenerife and Gran Canaria, then shift to Malaga from March through April 2028. Its new seven-night “Atlantic Fusion” itinerary includes calls in the Canary Islands and Agadir, Morocco.
Detailed designs for Marella Discovery 2’s replacement venues have not been released. The ship’s public deployment through mid-October 2027 does not show a dry-dock gap after its fall 2024 yard period.
Marella is also expanding its Cruise & Stay program with 39 additional hotels in destinations including Malaga, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Barbados, La Romana and Palma, bringing the program to 197 participating hotels. The winter 2027 program opened for booking on July 2, 2026.
Other operators broaden age-restricted products
Oceania Cruises said in January 2026 that it would transition its current eight-ship fleet, plus four ships under construction, to an 18-plus policy. The line said feedback from repeat guests, travel partners and new-to-brand customers showed demand for a quieter onboard atmosphere and more adult-oriented service style.
Ambassador Cruise Line is also moving all itineraries to adults-only from 2027 after previously alternating between multi-generational and adult-only departures. The line operates Ambience, Ambition and Renaissance and has previously outlined plans to expand to four ships by the end of 2026 and five by 2028.
P&O Cruises is moving in the opposite direction on part of its fleet. Arcadia and Aurora, which had been operated as adults-only ships, will accept children on some sailings beginning in December 2026, though with more limited children’s programming than P&O’s larger family ships.
Viking remains one of the established adults-only operators, with ocean ships in the 47,000- to 54,000-GT range, capacities below 1,000 passengers and no onboard casinos, water parks or rope courses. Virgin Voyages has also operated as adults-only since launch, setting a minimum age of 18.
Carnival expands its SEA program
Carnival Cruise Line’s SEA Cruises program, Sailings Exclusively for Adults, gives the mainstream operator a 21-plus product built around expanded casino access, casino tournaments, themed parties and upgraded dining. The program began as an invitation-only offer for casino loyalty guests, with 22 SEA cruises planned in 2026 across Carnival Conquest, Carnival Dream, Carnival Glory, Carnival Paradise and Carnival Firenze.
Four Carnival Firenze Mexican Riviera sailings scheduled for October and November 2026 were opened to any guest 21 or older with bookings made by June 30, 2026. The line canceled 11 regular Carnival Firenze sailings earlier this year to add the SEA departures.
Carnival has already adjusted two 2026 SEA itineraries. The November 2, 2026, Carnival Firenze cruise from Long Beach will visit Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta in a different order and operate with revised Mazatlan port times, while Carnival Conquest’s November 30, 2026, PortMiami sailing will replace Philipsburg, St. Maarten, with Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. Carnival told booked guests that pre-purchased shore excursions would be adjusted automatically or refunded for canceled ports.
