Hurricane Simon Forces Carnival Panorama to Skip Two Mexico Ports

Weather conditions made water shuttles unsafe during the first Cabo San Lucas attempt, Captain Salvatore Mangraviti said; booked excursions were moved to the new call date.

Carnival Panorama has canceled calls at Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan and rescheduled its Cabo San Lucas visit because of Hurricane Simon along Mexico’s Pacific coast. The changes affect an eight-night Mexican Riviera sailing that left Long Beach on Oct. 10.

Carnival added Ensenada to the revised itinerary, with a call scheduled for Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ship is operating a roundtrip voyage from its California homeport.

In an Oct. 13 letter to passengers, Captain Salvatore Mangraviti explained that the previous day’s attempted Cabo San Lucas visit could not proceed because “weather conditions made it unsafe to operate water shuttles.” A second attempt was scheduled for Oct. 14. He attributed the Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan cancellations to the hurricane’s location.

AIS vessel-tracking data subsequently showed Carnival Panorama anchored off Cabo San Lucas, indicating that the rescheduled visit went ahead.

Passengers who bought Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan shore excursions through Carnival will receive refunds to their onboard accounts. Carnival also moved its booked Cabo San Lucas excursions to the new port-call date.

“Everyone’s safety remains our top priority, and we’ll continue to monitor conditions,” Mangraviti told guests.

The 133,500-gross-ton ship, delivered in 2019 by Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard in Italy, accommodates 4,008 passengers at double occupancy.

The disruption follows other weather-related changes to Carnival Panorama’s West Coast operations since late September. Hurricane Polo affected the ship’s schedule first, followed by itinerary adjustments caused by Hurricane Rachel.
