Greenock Cruise Port will open its 2026 cruise season on April 12 with its first turnaround call of the year, as Ponant’s Le Lapérouse brings passengers to Scotland following a 10-night Norwegian cruise. The start date comes after a winter enhancement program that Global Ports Holding (GPH) says is designed to improve passenger flow and strengthen Greenock’s role as an embarkation and disembarkation gateway.

GPH outlines North European demand and port plans

GPH used a cruise industry event in Miami Beach to outline demand trends and operational planning across its North European cruise port network, including Greenock in Scotland, Liverpool in England and Bremerhaven in Germany. The company pointed to a strong cruise ship orderbook and growing interest in Northern Europe, while highlighting forecast passenger volumes, infrastructure upgrades and sustainability initiatives planned for 2026 and beyond.

John Mawer, Global Ports Holding general manager for UK Cruise Ports, said the UK remains a strategic focus for the operator. “The UK remains one of the most strategically important cruise markets for GPH, and both Liverpool and Greenock play a vital role in strengthening that position,” Mawer said.

Greenock’s 2026 operating outlook and turnaround schedule

GPH expects Greenock to host more than 77 cruise calls in 2026, with over 145,000 visitors forecast to arrive during the year. The company also described forward bookings as strong for 2027 and 2028, with Greenock seeing nearly 80 cruise calls per year.

GPH highlighted Greenock’s deep-water berth and modern terminal infrastructure, saying the facility can accommodate vessels of all sizes. The port’s proximity to Glasgow and Edinburgh was also cited as supporting a range of shore excursion options, which the operator positions as part of Greenock’s appeal as an embarkation and disembarkation hub.

What the April 12 turnaround call will involve

The April 12 call is scheduled to see Le Lapérouse arrive at Greenock with up to 184 guests and 112 crew. After guests disembark, a new group is set to embark for the ship’s seven-day Celtic Shores itinerary ending in Dublin.

GPH said the call will be the first of 14 turnaround visits planned by Ponant during Greenock’s 2026 season.

Winter enhancement work targets passenger flow and terminal experience

GPH said Greenock completed a winter enhancement program focused on infrastructure and guest experience, with updates intended to improve terminal circulation and processing times. “The completion of our winter enhancement program marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Greenock Cruise Port,” Mawer said. “These improvements are not merely infrastructure updates, they represent a strategic commitment to defining Inverclyde as a premier international gateway.”

According to the operator, the work included removing outdated gates, widening walkways, upgrading security arrangements, improving seating areas, refining passenger flow routes and speeding up baggage handling services. GPH also said a new welcome facility was introduced inside the terminal building, retail offerings were expanded, and the port’s main facility and marquee facility were upgraded to improve the overall passenger environment.

Liverpool targets high berth utilization and added guest services

In Liverpool, GPH said the cruise terminal is heading toward a record-breaking 2026 season, with 118 ship calls and 135 days alongside forecast and approximately 350,000 visitors expected. The operator said guest-facing additions are intended to support more independent travelers, including expanded retail opportunities and integrated hotel and pre-boarding experiences.

Technology and sustainability initiatives across the portfolio

GPH said sustainability is a priority at Greenock, pointing to low-carbon operations and an electric-powered fleet supporting cruise calls as part of efforts to enable “greener cruise calls” while maintaining operational throughput.

In Bremerhaven, GPH said the port is implementing onshore power supply (OPS), which it described as a step intended to allow ships to reduce emissions while alongside. The operator also said Bremerhaven has introduced self-driving coaches and AI-powered robots designed to streamline terminal processes.

Timo Schoen, Bremerhaven Cruise Port general manager, said the port is pursuing a combined approach to operations and environmental measures. “Bremerhaven Cruise Port is focused on leading the next generation of cruise operations, where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand,” Schoen said. “Our ambition is to create a future-ready port environment that delivers measurable value to cruise lines while setting new standards for how passengers experience the terminal from arrival to embarkation.”

With Greenock’s first turnaround call scheduled for mid-April and Liverpool projecting high call volumes across 135 days alongside, GPH said it is positioning its North European network around near-term execution and multi-year booking signals as the 2026 season approaches.
