Carnival Legend Guests View Total Solar Eclipse Off Northern Spain
Darkness lasted just under two minutes as passengers gathered on the outer decks with Carnival-provided viewing glasses during the eleven-night Dover roundtrip.
Guests on Carnival Cruise Line’s first dedicated solar eclipse voyage watched totality from Carnival Legend on Aug. 12, 2026. The line positioned the ship in the path of the eclipse off northern Spain. Darkness lasted just under two minutes.
The event was the first total solar eclipse visible from Europe since 1999. Carnival has scheduled three additional eclipse voyages for 2027, including a South America sailing timed to an annular eclipse in February.
Eclipse viewing off northern Spain
The 11-night Carnival Journeys cruise departed Dover on Aug. 9 for a roundtrip Western Europe itinerary covering France, Guernsey, Spain, Portugal and Belgium. Its scheduled calls include Le Havre, St. Peter Port, Vigo, Lisbon, Leixoes, Le Verdon and Zeebrugge before a return to Dover on Aug. 20.
For the eclipse, Carnival distributed viewing glasses to passengers gathering on the outer decks. The ship also offered eclipse programming, themed entertainment, drinks and other activities tied to the event.
When bookings opened in August 2024, Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy said, “The chance to see a total solar eclipse while having fun exploring the cultural richness of Spain, Portugal and France aboard Carnival Legend is a truly special opportunity.”
Carnival Legend was among several cruise ships operating in or near the path of totality. Cunard deployed Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Anne along the eclipse path, while Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess was also nearby. Royal Caribbean International adjusted Liberty of the Seas’ itinerary to improve eclipse viewing.
Select Platinum benefits suspended
Carnival suspended several VIFP loyalty benefits for the voyage because of the high number of Platinum-level passengers aboard Carnival Legend. In an email to booked guests, the line said it could not provide priority embarkation and debarkation, early stateroom access, early luggage drop-off or priority luggage delivery.
Priority service at Guest Services and by telephone was also subject to availability. Carnival told passengers that the changes were consistent with other sailings carrying a large concentration of Platinum members. The company does not disclose passenger counts by loyalty tier.
Carnival replaces VIFP with its new Carnival Rewards program on Sept. 1. Existing Platinum members will retain that status through Dec. 31, 2028, although future status will be based partly on eligible spending and must be requalified for in subsequent earning periods.
Three eclipse cruises planned for 2027
Carnival Firenze will operate the first follow-up voyage, leaving Buenos Aires on Feb. 2, 2027, for a 16-night Carnival Journeys cruise to Miami. The itinerary is timed for an annular solar eclipse on Feb. 6 and includes Rio de Janeiro and Maceio in Brazil, followed by Grenada, Martinique and St. Maarten.
Carnival Sunshine will depart Barcelona on July 25 for a 10-night Mediterranean cruise scheduled around the Aug. 2 eclipse. Four days later, Carnival Miracle will leave Dover on an 11-night Carnival Journeys itinerary to Portugal, Spain, France and Belgium, with a dedicated day at sea for eclipse viewing.
