Carnival Freedom Returns With New Funnel After Marseille Refit

The 110,000-gross-ton ship had sailed with a straight funnel for more than two years after fires in 2022 and 2024 damaged its whale tail fins.

Carnival Freedom will resume passenger service from Barcelona on October 9, 2026, following a 35-day dry dock at Chantier Naval de Marseille in France. The work included a new whale tail funnel and an expanded casino with more than 100 additional gaming machines.

Carnival Cruise Line has also opened reservations for the ship’s 2028-29 season from Norfolk, Virginia, offering six- to eight-day cruises through April 2029.

The replacement funnel is lower than its predecessor, a change Carnival said will allow the ship to reach additional ports, though the line has not identified which ones. Other onboard work included updates to the video arcade and shops, along with accessibility improvements throughout the vessel.

Carnival Freedom also received the line’s “From Sea to Shining Sea” bow crest, which first appeared on Carnival Magic and Carnival Legend during their May 2026 dry docks.

“With the debut of this new crest, we’re reinforcing what guests have long known: Carnival is proud to be America’s Cruise Line,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said when the design was introduced.

Florida return and new Norfolk sailings

The first post-refit voyage is an eight-day Mediterranean roundtrip with calls at Marseille, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples and Malta. Carnival Freedom will then depart Barcelona on October 17 for a 13-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic crossing.

That voyage calls at Alicante, Malaga and Gibraltar before crossing the Atlantic to Celebration Key and reaching Port Canaveral on October 30. The ship will then operate four- and five-night Bahamas cruises from the Florida port until a final departure on May 3, 2027.

A 15-night Southern Caribbean repositioning cruise will leave Port Canaveral on May 8, 2027, and end in Norfolk.

The newly released Norfolk season covers Bermuda, Canada, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean. Depending on the itinerary, destinations include Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Celebration Key and RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, as well as San Juan and King’s Wharf. Canadian calls in the program include Halifax, Saint John, Sydney and Charlottetown.

Two fires preceded the funnel replacement

Built by Fincantieri in 2007, the 110,000-gross-ton Carnival Freedom accommodates 2,980 passengers at double occupancy. The latest work restores the whale tail profile after the ship spent more than two years sailing with a modified, straight funnel.

The ship first lost its funnel fins following a May 26, 2022, fire while docked at Grand Turk. Damage to the starboard fin required emergency repairs in Freeport, Bahamas, where the fins were removed.

A replacement funnel was installed during the vessel’s October 2023 dry dock at Navantia in Cadiz, Spain. That refurbishment also added Carnival’s red, white and blue hull colors and the Heroes Tribute Bar.

A second fire occurred on March 23, 2024, while the ship was sailing in the Bahamas, damaging the port fin. Lightning was suspected as the cause. Emergency repairs again left the vessel with a modified funnel.
