Carnival Dream Delays Galveston Boarding as Isaias Disrupts Cruises
Initial alerts covered six ships and 12 sailings from Galveston, New Orleans and Tampa, sent via onboard letters and text messages to booked passengers.
Carnival Cruise Line began warning guests on six ships covering 12 current and upcoming sailings as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico. Carnival has since delayed boarding on one of those ships and shifted port-call times on two others.
The monitoring covers cruises from Galveston, New Orleans and Tampa. Although the initial forecast did not put an active cruise homeport directly in the storm’s landfall path, it placed Isaias across routes connecting Caribbean destinations with Gulf Coast departure ports.
Boarding delay and revised port calls
Carnival Dream’s seven-night Bahamas departure from Galveston on October 10 faces delayed embarkation after the ship’s preceding voyage was held up by Isaias. Guests have been instructed to arrive at the terminal two hours later than planned and complete check-in by 4 p.m. No further itinerary changes have been announced for the ship.
Carnival Liberty shifted its October 9 visit to Cozumel an hour earlier, calling from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The adjustment was the only announced change to its seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary from New Orleans.
Carnival Valor departed New Orleans as scheduled, but sought calmer waters away from the hurricane and shortened its Cozumel visit. Arrival moved from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., while departure moved from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m.
No other cruise lines had announced Isaias-related itinerary changes at the time of those updates.
Storm monitoring across Gulf homeports
Carnival’s initial communications included letters delivered onboard and text messages sent to booked passengers. Guests on Carnival Breeze’s October 10 departure were initially advised that their voyage plans remained unchanged.
“Currently, there is no adjustment to our plans,” Carnival Dream Captain Zvonko Anic wrote in an October 7 letter to guests aboard the ship’s October 3 sailing. He said the ship was working with Carnival’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami and would continue assessing forecasts and updating passengers. The center operates around the clock, providing shipboard leadership with weather, nautical and incident-response support.
The original watch covered the following departures:
- New Orleans: Carnival Liberty on October 4 and 11, and Carnival Valor on October 3 and 8.
- Galveston: Carnival Breeze on October 5 and 10, Carnival Dream on October 3 and 10, and Carnival Jubilee on October 3 and 11.
- Tampa: Carnival Paradise on October 4 and 8.
At 7 p.m. CDT on October 7, the National Hurricane Center placed Isaias about 200 miles west-northwest of Progreso, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. It was moving east-northeast at 8 mph and was expected to reach Category 1 hurricane strength.
The storm subsequently reached sustained winds of 85 mph. Later forecasts called for Category 2 strength, with winds of 100 mph at landfall near Mobile, Alabama. Tropical storm warnings extended from New Orleans to Apalachee Bay, Florida, while hurricane warnings covered the coast from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Panama City, Florida. No cruise departures from Mobile were scheduled until later in October.
Passengers on affected sailings can receive text notifications by sending their voyage-specific code to CRUISE (278473). Carnival Breeze and Carnival Jubilee remain under review for potential turnaround changes.
