As cruise lines compete for adults seeking more than buffet fare, Virgin is betting that destination-inspired Indian dining can be a signature draw for its European sailings.

Virgin Voyages will introduce a new Indian restaurant, Ariya, on its adults-only ship Valiant Lady, with the onboard debut planned for late May 2026 after the vessel completes a scheduled drydock.

The company said Ariya will be exclusive to Valiant Lady and is timed to open as the ship returns to service for its European season following the May 9-25, 2026 shipyard visit.

Late May debut aligned with Valiant Lady’s return from drydock

Virgin Voyages has tied the opening of Ariya to Valiant Lady’s next shipyard visit, listing the drydock dates as May 9-25, 2026. Once the ship reenters service on May 25, the restaurant is expected to begin operating in late May as the European program gets underway.

Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO of Virgin Voyages, positioned the venue as a meaningful addition to the line’s food and beverage lineup. “Ariya is the next chapter in our food and beverage collection,” Saverimuttu said.

How the restaurant will operate onboard

Ariya is being created through an evening conversion of an existing venue. Razzle Dazzle will continue to operate as a breakfast and brunch restaurant during the day, then shift to Ariya at night in a dinner-only configuration.

Virgin Voyages has described the nighttime setup as a 220-seat restaurant, designed around a low-lit atmosphere with booth seating and a dedicated semi-private dining area intended to serve as a focal point within the room.

Concept, name, and design inspiration

Virgin Voyages developed the restaurant concept with Indie Culinaire and celebrity chef, television personality, and cookbook author Maneet Chauhan. The company said the name Ariya is connected to Sir Richard Branson’s family history, describing a traveler in his lineage, identified as Branson’s great-great-grandmother, who traveled coastal Tamil Nadu and believed food could bridge cultural and linguistic distance.

“Every restaurant we open is a statement about what we believe dining at sea can be, and Ariya says something we haven’t said before,” Saverimuttu said.

Design details highlighted by the company include inspiration drawn from Indian spice markets and a semi-private dining space framed by decorative screens meant to evoke the interior of a traditional jewelry box. Virgin Voyages also described a deliberate pacing to the experience, along with soft lighting and an Indian classical soundtrack.

Virgin Voyages said Ariya’s menu will pull from multiple regions of India, including coastal preparations and spiced classics, with chaat, described as a tangy, crispy Indian street food, positioned as a key part of the restaurant’s identity.

Levi Mezick, senior director of culinary program development at Virgin Voyages, said the goal is to deliver unexpected flavor combinations. “The spice combinations alone will surprise people,” Mezick said.

Examples of dishes Virgin Voyages has identified for Ariya include:

  • Lamb Shank Biryani, listed among the restaurant’s early signature dishes.
  • Goan Curried Mussels, highlighted as a coastal-inspired offering.
  • Malabar Coconut Crab Cake, named as one of the menu’s regional preparations.
  • Puffed Rice and Avocado Chaat, reflecting the restaurant’s chaat-focused flavors.
  • Tandoori Pistachio-Crusted Snapper, included in the initial set of dishes shared by the company.

On beverages, Virgin Voyages said the bar program will include a curated wine list, Indian small-batch spirits, and a traditional chai tea service. The company also said diners will begin with a complimentary welcome sip of jaljeera, described as a chilled tamarind-and-cumin beverage intended to refresh the palate.

Virgin Voyages has named several cocktails for Ariya, including Maharani Morning (rose, cardamom, and sparkling wine), Golden Hour Spritz (saffron and honey), Saffron & Silk (scotch and toasted coconut smoke), and Bangalore Old Fashioned (jaggery and cardamom). For guests avoiding alcohol, the company has highlighted a zero-proof option called Seventh Leaf.

European and UK itineraries after the opening

Valiant Lady, launched in 2022 and listed at about 110,000 gross tons, accommodates 2,770 guests. After returning to service on May 25, 2026, the ship is slated to homeport in Barcelona, Spain, sailing 6- to 8-night itineraries calling on destinations in Italy, Spain, and France.

Virgin Voyages has also said Valiant Lady will later homeport in Portsmouth, UK, for longer voyages described as 7- to 15-night itineraries visiting a mix of destinations in England, Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, and the Netherlands.

Saverimuttu said the new venue could be a deciding factor for prospective guests. “For those who haven’t [sailed with us], Ariya might be the reason they book,” he said.
