VidantaWorld Voyages Launches 216-Guest Elegant in 2026 Mediterranean
Vidanta’s resort-first entry shows how luxury cruising is shifting toward intimate, port-focused sailing as shipyard backlogs push newcomers to reinvent older ships.
VidantaWorld Voyages, a division of Mexico’s Grupo Vidanta, has officially brought its first ship, the 216-guest Elegant, into the Mediterranean with a yacht-style program built around longer port stays and late-night departures.
The company has mapped seven-night itineraries from April 11 through Oct. 2, 2026, with a return Mediterranean season planned from May through September 2027. Ivan Chavez, executive vice president of Grupo Vidanta, said the aim is to use a smaller ship and higher space-per-guest ratios to “redefin[e] what luxury at sea could feel like.”
A small-ship entry built on extended time in port
VidantaWorld Voyages is positioning Elegant as an ultra-yacht style product, emphasizing late departures, overnight calls, and access to ports more commonly associated with yacht traffic. Chavez said the company “wanted to show the Mediterranean at night, not just during the day,” with some departures planned as late as midnight or 1 a.m. and select calls extending overnight or even for two nights.
The itinerary plan spans multiple Mediterranean circuits, including the French Riviera, the Spanish Coast, the Azores and Portugal, the Greek Islands and Adriatic Sea, and Italian-focused routes. Ports highlighted by the company include Saint-Tropez, Monte Carlo, and Cannes.
From a larger legacy vessel to a 216-guest layout
Elegant’s current configuration follows an extensive refurbishment of a 1990-built ship acquired from All Leisure Group. The vessel previously sailed under names including Voyager and Discovery and had been designed for more than 600 guests, while also being marketed for roughly 540 passengers in earlier operations.
VidantaWorld Voyages reduced capacity to 216 by reworking accommodations and reallocating space across the ship. Chavez described the redesign approach with a development analogy: “We treated the ship as if it were a piece of land, what can we build on this size?”
Why Vidanta opted for a refit instead of a newbuild
Chavez said the company evaluated new ships but found timelines and design flexibility to be limiting. “We did look at newbuilds,” he said, adding that shipyards indicated delivery windows of seven to eight years and offered designs that were largely repeats of ships already on order.
Rather than wait, Vidanta opted to rework an existing hull and rebuild the guest experience around larger suites and expanded public areas. Design partners included Tillberg Design of Sweden, along with the Rockwell Group of New York.
Rebuilt public spaces, expanded suites, and a deployable marina
Vidanta said it reshaped the ship to better align with how its resort customers define luxury space. Chavez said some trial guests were new to cruising and compared staterooms to the large rooms they had just left on land, prompting Vidanta to enlarge accommodations by combining two, three, and sometimes four original cabins into single suites.
The rebuild also included structural changes, such as adding a stern superstructure for a restaurant, reducing the number of interior cabins, and increasing outdoor deck space. Chavez summarized the onboard scope by saying, “Everything guest-facing is new.”
- Suites and space planning: Vidanta combined multiple former cabins into larger suites, a key driver behind the capacity cut to 216 guests. The company has framed the redesign as mirroring the spaciousness associated with its land-based resorts.
- Dining and bar venues: The refurbishment added multiple restaurants and bars, along with coffee lounges. Vidanta has also identified three named restaurants: Montelimar (Mediterranean cuisine), Gu (Asian fusion), and Flor de Agave (Mexican cuisine).
- Entertainment and nightlife: The ship includes a casino and a theater, replacing what Chavez said had previously been only a lounge. A sports viewing area is also part of the updated public-space mix.
- Wellness facilities: Guest-facing upgrades include spa and fitness facilities as part of the broader rebuild of public areas.
- Marina access for yacht-style calls: Elegant features a marina lounge and a deployable marina platform designed to support the itinerary strategy focused on smaller ports. The company said the ship operates with two tenders to support calls at destinations typically associated with yachts.
Ports secured, and an itinerary built around flexibility
Chavez said the ship’s size and onboard logistics are central to its ability to plan calls that prioritize experience over scale. He said ports were chosen based on guest experience first and then aligned with operating constraints, and that Vidanta secured about 85 to 90 percent of the itinerary plan it wanted.
In addition to late departures, the company has emphasized extended stays as a core feature, aiming to give guests more time ashore in the evening and after dark in key destinations across the Mediterranean.
A deliberate shift away from all-inclusive pricing
Chavez said Elegant is intentionally not positioned as an all-inclusive cruise, aligning the onboard business model with how Grupo Vidanta approaches its resort product. “All-inclusive is not synonymous with luxury in our view,” he said.
He argued that charging for dining and certain onboard services creates clearer accountability for delivery. “When a customer is paying for a meal or for a service onboard, if they receive quality, satisfaction will be there,” Chavez said.
Who Vidanta expects onboard, and how the ship was tested
Chavez said Grupo Vidanta’s resort business historically draws about 75 percent of its guests from the U.S. and Canada, with 25 percent coming from Mexico, and that its North American base is filling the debut Mediterranean summer program for Elegant.
To prepare for service, Vidanta conducted two months of friends-and-family test sailings and brought experienced resort leaders onboard, including senior chefs, housekeeping staff, and hotel managers, while also staffing the operation with seasoned cruise professionals. The ship is described as mostly adult-only, with approximately 20 cabins made available to families on select summer sailings.
Winter 2026-27 charters in Europe, and a broader fleet ambition
After the 2026 Mediterranean season, Elegant is scheduled to remain in Europe for the 2026-27 winter, with the ship placed in a warm layup on a river in northern France. Chavez said the off-season period is slated for charters and special events, and that Vidanta has already seen interest from the film industry as well as from groups seeking full-ship family charters.
Chavez also framed Elegant as a starting point rather than a one-off. “Our aim is not just to have one ship,” he said, adding that the company wants to grow to multiple ships over time and explore how to incorporate offerings that work for families while maintaining the personalized, small-ship luxury approach.
