Silver Endeavour Marks Five Years Since Crystal Cruises Debut

Silver Endeavour has completed its fifth year of service, a period that took the polar expedition ship from Crystal Cruises to Silversea after Crystal shut down and its assets were sold. The vessel, originally delivered in Germany as Crystal Endeavor, now operates for Royal Caribbean Group’s Silversea largely on Arctic and Antarctic programs.

The ship’s early operating history spans a pandemic-era delivery, a shortened first Antarctica season and a $275 million acquisition by Silversea within roughly a year of its Crystal debut. It remains Silversea’s newest expedition ship and is part of a four-vessel expedition group within the line’s 12-ship fleet.

Silversea’s current specifications list Silver Endeavour at 20,449 gross tons, 539 feet in length and PC6 ice class, with 110 suites for 220 guests and capacity for 207 crew. Those figures differ from earlier Crystal-era descriptions that commonly listed the vessel at about 200 passengers and 19,800 tons.

Crystal debut was cut short

The ship was built at MV Werften in Stralsund, Germany, as part of Genting Hong Kong’s expansion of Crystal Cruises. It was named at the shipyard on June 26, 2021, with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig serving as godmother during a ceremony on the vessel’s helicopter deck.

Guest operations began July 17, 2021, when Crystal deployed the ship on 10-night Iceland sailings from Reykjavik. The vessel then repositioned to Ushuaia and began its first Antarctica expedition on Nov. 19, 2021, with voyages of 11 to 19 nights scheduled for destinations including the South Shetland Islands, the Weddell Sea and South Georgia.

That Antarctica season ended early in February 2022. Crystal halted operations during its financial problems.

Silversea returned the vessel to polar service

Silversea announced the purchase in July 2022 and renamed the ship Silver Endeavour. The vessel entered service for Silversea on Nov. 19, 2022, after a naming ceremony in Antarctica’s Lemaire Channel.

Its first Silversea deployment took over itineraries previously assigned to Silver Explorer in Antarctica. The ship then moved to the Arctic for the 2023 northern summer season and has continued alternating between polar programs.

For the current northern summer, Silver Endeavour is sailing Arctic itineraries that include Spitsbergen and Greenland. The ship is due at King George Island in late October for Silversea’s 2026-27 Antarctica fly-cruise season.
