Sanya Cruise Port Expansion Reaches 60% With April Target
Sanya Port Group owns the project, where crews have moved into superstructure work using an overhead launching gantry to place prefabricated box girders.
The first phase of the Hainan Sanya International Cruise Port expansion is about 60 percent complete, with overall completion targeted for April, according to Hainan provincial transport authorities and Sanya project sources. The new berth is designed to accommodate ships of up to 100,000 tons.
The project includes a 365-meter quay with projected annual passenger throughput of 420,000. Hainan provincial transport media said the additional berth is intended to ease the province’s shortage of large cruise terminal facilities.
Sanya Port Group is the project owner, with China Communications First Navigation Bureau Third Engineering Company responsible for marine construction. Crews are now installing beams and deck slabs following completion of the main berth’s pile foundations.
A late-August inspection by the Sanya municipal transport authority confirmed that construction had advanced to the superstructure stage. Beam erection started on August 27, according to Sanya media, after approval of the bridge erection system.
Workers are using an overhead launching gantry to place prefabricated box girders. Concrete pours for the approach bridges are finished, while work continues on rear-platform concrete, cast-in-place lower crossbeams and precast beam installation. Basin dredging and ancillary works are proceeding alongside construction of the berth.
Sanya’s existing international cruise facilities include Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal in Sanya Bay, which has an operating 80,000-ton-class berth. Larger berths are also planned or under development.
Provincial transport guidance calls for the lower crossbeams to be completed by the end of September. The main berth structure is scheduled to be finished by the end of December.
