River Expeditions Plans European Debut on Rhine in 2028
Founded by expedition leader Jan Bryde, the brand plans to place 10 expedition professionals on each journey, with 10 double kayaks, e-bikes and seasonal gear aboard.
River Expeditions has signed a long-term vessel charter agreement with Crucemundo Shipping AG ahead of a planned European debut in the first quarter of 2028. The renovated River Silence will be renamed River Expedition and configured for 160 guests, with initial sailings planned on the Rhine, Main and Danube. Crucemundo Shipping AG is associated with Crucemundo River Cruises, which manages and charters vessels on the same rivers.
The new brand, founded by expedition leader Jan Bryde, plans to put 10 expedition professionals on every journey. Its program will combine onboard interpretation with community visits, wildlife observation and activities including hiking, kayaking and e-bike excursions.
“After more than 30 years exploring some of the world's most remote places, I've come to believe that exploration is a mindset, not a destination,” Bryde said.
Planned encounters with local communities will focus on regional traditions and histories, alongside access to selected locations. Birdwatching and guided hikes will form part of the outdoor program, with additional seasonal activities offered where conditions permit. The ship will carry 10 double kayaks, e-bikes and specialist seasonal gear.
The vessel uses a twin-cruiser arrangement. Its propulsion machinery is separated from the passenger accommodation, a layout River Expeditions says reduces engine noise and vibration in guest areas. Plans also include facilities adapted for the expedition program, although the company has not detailed individual spaces.
Expedition leaders Ida Olsson and Ryan Hope-Inglis will help develop and deliver the program for the brand’s opening season.
