Quark Guests Watch 2026 Total Solar Eclipse From Greenland
David Baron gave a keynote aboard Ultramarine, while Michael Zeiler led astronomy and celestial mechanics sessions during Ocean Explorer’s 17-day voyage.
Guests aboard Quark Expeditions’ Ultramarine and Ocean Explorer observed the Aug. 12, 2026, total solar eclipse from Harefjord, Greenland, with totality lasting about two minutes and 15 seconds. Quark paired the viewing with onboard programming led by science journalist David Baron and eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler.
It was the first total solar eclipse visible from the region since 2015. The path of totality crossed Greenland and Iceland, and Quark described the viewing duration as one of the longest available anywhere during the event.
Eclipse specialists joined each voyage
Baron sailed aboard Ultramarine. The author of American Eclipse gave a keynote titled Scientific America: The Eclipse That Enlightened A Nation before the ship reached the viewing location.
“This was my tenth total solar eclipse, but my first in the High Arctic, and the setting enhanced the experience,” Baron said. He described seeing the sun’s corona above the terrain of Scoresbysund as a reminder of why eclipse viewers have traveled long distances for centuries.
Ocean Explorer hosted Zeiler, founder of GreatAmericanEclipse.com and co-author of Atlas of Solar Eclipses: 2020 to 2045. During the 17-day voyage, he led sessions covering eclipse observation, astronomy and celestial mechanics.
Zeiler said he had spent years mapping the eclipse and had identified Scoresbysund early as a strong viewing location. “Seeing the map become real, exactly where the calculations said it would, never gets old,” he said.
Photography guidance added to both sailings
Both voyages also offered Quark’s new Guided Photography Program. Dedicated photography experts worked with guests on capturing the eclipse as well as the surrounding Greenland landscape.
