Port Canaveral Earns Green Marine Certification for 10th Year

The port homeports eighteen cruise ships across seven brands, records more than one thousand annual sailings and gets roughly three-quarters of revenue from cruise activity.

Port Canaveral has earned Green Marine certification for the 10th consecutive year, extending its participation in the voluntary maritime environmental program that covers ports, terminal operators, shipyards, seaways and vessel owners. The Florida port joined Green Marine in 2016 and received certification that same year.

The certification comes as Port Canaveral handles the largest cruise volumes in its history, with 8.6 million passenger movements in fiscal 2025, up 13% from fiscal 2024. The port homeports 18 cruise ships across seven brands and generates roughly three-quarters of its revenue from cruise activity.

“Achieving this international certification year after year reflects our continuous commitment to operate responsibly and with respect for the natural resources that make our region such a special place,” said Capt. John Murray, Port Canaveral CEO.

Green Marine evaluates participants on environmental performance indicators including greenhouse gases and other air emissions, aquatic ecosystems, community impacts, environmental leadership, underwater noise and waste management. Participants conduct annual self-assessments, with independent third-party verification required every two years.

“Environmental stewardship is fundamental to everything we do,” said Bob Musser, Port Canaveral’s senior director, environmental. “Green Marine challenges participants to continually improve their environmental performance beyond regulatory requirements.”

The program scores participants on a 1-to-5 performance scale and requires individual results to be made public. Green Marine was founded in 2007 as a voluntary maritime industry initiative and now includes more than 130 participating shipowners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyards.

The port serves Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises, and records more than 1,000 annual sailings.

Green Marine’s annual results are published publicly through the program’s reporting process, typically in late May or early June.
