Placido Libro to Take Command of Crystal Serenity in 2026
Libro joined Crystal in 2024 as director of maritime affairs and has overseen Crystal Grace development, with plans to captain the newbuild during its 2028 inaugural season.
Crystal has appointed Captain Placido Libro as master of the 740-guest Crystal Serenity, effective Aug. 14, 2026. He succeeds Captain Birger J. Vorland, who recently ended a Crystal career that spanned nearly five decades.
The appointment puts Libro, who joined Crystal in 2024 as director of maritime affairs, onto the bridge of Crystal Serenity while he continues work tied to the Crystal Grace newbuild. Crystal said he will also serve as captain of Crystal Grace during her inaugural season in 2028.
Libro has more than 40 years of maritime experience, including senior roles in fleet operations, safety and shipboard command. Since joining Crystal, he has overseen key phases of the development and construction of Crystal Grace.
“It is an extraordinary honor to take command of Crystal Serenity, a ship known for delivering some of the finest experiences at sea,” Libro said. He said he looks forward to working with the ship’s officers and crew while “upholding the highest standards of safety, service and operational excellence.”
He also said he is “excited to continue supporting the development of Crystal Grace and, in time, lead her through the final stages of construction and into service as she begins a new chapter for Crystal.”
Roberto Fazi, Crystal’s senior vice president of marine operations, said Libro’s experience and safety focus made him “the ideal leader to join Captain Vincent Tallaird on Crystal Serenity.” He has worked with Libro for 20 years, Fazi said, citing his dedication to crew, guests and the brand’s operating standards.
Libro completed his studies at the Nautical Institute of Messina in Sicily in 1983 and began his maritime career as an officer in the Italian Navy. His cruise and ferry career has included positions as deck officer, safety officer, staff captain and captain for operators including Costa, Carnival and Silversea.
Crystal Grace is under construction at Fincantieri’s Marghera/Venice shipyard in Italy. The ship is planned for about 650 guests and roughly 62,000 gross tons. The line currently operates Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony.
