Penang’s Swettenham Pier Can Now Berth Two Mega Cruise Ships

Port leaders from Singapore, Penang and Sarawak used CruiseWorld Malaysia 2026 to outline how Southeast Asia’s cruise terminals are being redesigned as tourism gateways, not only embarkation points. The work ranges from Singapore’s post-revamp passenger-flow technology to Penang’s expanded berth and bus-handling capacity and Sarawak’s planned Damai International Cruise Terminal.

Singapore adds capacity and passenger-flow tools

An October 2025 revamp at Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore removed earlier congestion by creating dedicated embarkation areas for each cruise line, Gregory Tan, CEO of SATS-Creuers Cruise Services, said at the event. The centre’s S$40 million 2025 upgrade raised passenger capacity to 11,700. The earlier design load was 6,800 passengers.

“We take a broader view that it is a gateway into Singapore and its larger tourism offerings,” Tan said.

MBCCS is investing in artificial intelligence, CCTV analytics and license plate recognition to better track passenger movement and improve traffic flow. The technology is also intended to link the terminal more closely with Singapore’s tourism precincts, according to Tan.

Penang expands berth and ground-transport capacity

Penang’s Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal has completed a RM100 million post-pandemic expansion that extended its quay wall from 540 meters to 840 meters. The terminal can now berth two mega cruise ships simultaneously, or up to four vessels in mixed sizes, and can handle about 12,000 passengers at one time.

CEO Sasedharan Vasudevan said the work also includes new fenders to improve berthing efficiency, upgraded washrooms and stronger Wi-Fi coverage for passengers and tour operators. Adjacent to the terminal, a planned 2,000-square-meter ground transport area is intended to manage as many as 80 buses during mega-ship calls.

Sasedharan tied Penang’s capacity planning to an expected 8% to 10% increase in Asia deployment and about 30 mega luxury ships due in the next few years.

Semester at Sea has revised its Spring 2027 World Voyage on World Odyssey, cancelling a planned call at Surabaya because of new port access challenges and adding a five-day stay in Penang. The change does not alter the voyage length or other arrival and departure times, and Semester at Sea described Penang as a gateway to the George Town UNESCO Heritage Site.

Sarawak plans Damai as a new cruise call

In East Malaysia, Sarawak’s Damai International Cruise Terminal is being developed as part of a wider tourism masterplan running to 2030. Plans call for the terminal to handle cruise ships carrying roughly 2,000 to 6,000 tourists per voyage and to support tourism around Kuching and Santubong.

Faisal Ahmad Zaidin, deputy general manager and group chief operating officer of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, said the project is intended to address a long-standing gap in regional cruise itineraries. Sarawak has often been bypassed because suitable cruise infrastructure was not available, he said.

“The terminal will not be designed simply as a place for ships to dock, but as a gateway for experience,” Faisal said.

The Damai development is planned to combine cruise facilities with hospitality, marina uses, cultural attractions and mixed-use development, while keeping ecotourism and community benefits in the project brief. Sarawak’s target is to become a regular regional cruise call after the terminal opens.

Shore power and booking systems set the next steps

Penang is also preparing for future sustainability requirements, including shore power and wider green-port planning. “There’s a lot of pressure for ports to become greener and practice sustainable tourism,” Sasedharan said.

“We are certainly going the path of digital platform,” he said. The port’s transport pre-booking platform is scheduled for January 2027, with later phases set to add attractions and destination information before passengers arrive.
