Holland America to Position Oosterdam off Spain for 2026 Eclipse

Adam Burgasser, a University of California San Diego professor who joined Koningsdam for the 2024 eclipse, will sail on Oosterdam for question-and-answer sessions and live commentary.

Holland America Line will position Oosterdam off Spain on Aug. 12, 2026, for total solar eclipse viewing during a 13-day Mediterranean sailing from Lisbon. The Aug. 9-22 cruise is open for booking and is built around a sunset eclipse expected to be visible from parts of the western Mediterranean.

The sailing adds a dedicated eclipse product to Holland America’s 2026 Europe program, using the roughly 1,900-passenger Oosterdam as the viewing platform for an event whose path of totality crosses northern Spain and the Balearic Islands around early evening local time.

Dr. Adam Burgasser, a professor at UC San Diego, will sail with the ship to lead eclipse programming. Burgasser previously joined Holland America’s Koningsdam for the 2024 eclipse.

“What makes the Mediterranean so compelling for this eclipse is the setting itself,” Burgasser said. “In parts of the western Mediterranean, totality will occur low on the horizon, creating a rare ‘sunset eclipse.’”

The line said onboard programming will include eclipse-focused food and beverage offerings, viewing events, lectures, question-and-answer sessions and live commentary during totality. Burgasser said guests could see long shadows, a larger-looking sun because of the horizon-proximity effect and a possible diamond-ring effect as the sun nears the sea.

Lisbon departure includes Spain, France, Monaco and Italy

The itinerary departs Lisbon on Aug. 9, 2026, and calls in Alicante before the ship moves into position off the Spanish coast for eclipse viewing. Oosterdam then overnights in Barcelona before continuing to Port-Vendres and Marseille in France and Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The Italy portion includes Livorno for access to Florence and Pisa, followed by Rome, Naples and Messina in Sicily before the voyage concludes at Civitavecchia. Holland America did not include a starting fare in the announcement.

The 2026 total solar eclipse crosses Spain on Aug. 12, with the totality path running from the Atlantic side of the country across the north and toward the Balearic Islands. Barcelona is outside the path of totality.

Holland America has not announced additional eclipse-focused sailings for the same date.
