Fincantieri Floats Out Oceania Sonata Ahead of 2027 Delivery
Oceania Sonata will carry 1,390 passengers in 695 rooms and suites, with suites making up one-third of accommodations and new two-bedroom Owner's Suites.
Fincantieri floated out the 86,000-gross-ton Oceania Sonata at its Marghera shipyard in Italy on Aug. 27, moving the 1,390-passenger newbuild to a fitting-out berth ahead of delivery in August 2027. The vessel is the first of five ships planned for Oceania Cruises’ new Sonata class.
Oceania Sonata will be nearly 30% larger than Oceania Allura while adding only 90 guest accommodations. One-third of its 695 rooms and suites will be suites, including new categories and the line’s first two-bedroom Owner’s Suites.
Paolo Novarino, senior director and project owner at Oceania Cruises, attended the float-out with Marco Lunardi, senior vice president of Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard. With the exterior structure complete, construction will now focus on the ship’s interiors and onboard venues.
“The float out of Oceania Sonata is an incredibly exciting moment as we move one step closer to welcoming our first guests aboard next August,” said Jason Montague, chief luxury officer at Oceania Cruises.
More space and new suite categories
The vessel measures 922 feet. Its four Owner’s Suites will have two bedrooms, while the new Horizon Suites will provide more than 600 square feet with separate living and sleeping areas, walk-through closets and oversized verandas.
A second new category, the 488-square-foot Penthouse Deluxe Suite, will have an expanded layout and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. The ship is also planned with an adults-only environment and larger public areas, including bars and lounges.
Oceania Sonata will have 13 dining venues. Two new concepts, La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen, will join returning Oceania restaurants including Jacques, Red Ginger, Polo Grill and Toscana.
Five Sonata-class ships planned through 2037
The Sonata-class design follows Oceania’s Allura class, comprising Oceania Vista and Oceania Allura. Fincantieri built both vessels at its Sestri Ponente yard and delivered them in 2023 and 2025, respectively.
Oceania Arietta is scheduled to follow Sonata in 2029. Three more sister ships are planned for delivery in 2032, 2035 and 2037, under the order program between Fincantieri and Oceania parent Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.
The companies’ shipbuilding relationship includes Oceania Marina, delivered in 2011, and Oceania Riviera in 2012. Fincantieri’s Marghera yard has completed 36 cruise ships since 1991.
Inaugural season spans more than 90 destinations
Oceania Sonata’s inaugural deployment will continue through April 2028 and cover more than 90 destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Panama Canal region.
A 16-day voyage departing Los Angeles on Jan. 6, 2028, will call in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Colombia and Grand Cayman before arriving in Miami. The ship will begin a 10-day roundtrip Caribbean cruise from Miami on March 1, with calls in Puerto Plata, San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Antigua and Tortola.
