Ambition Reroutes Northern Norway Cruise to Avoid Storms

Replacement berths include Andalsnes on October 26 and Bergen on October 29; Alesund, scheduled for October 28, will be Ambition’s second call there.

Ambition’s storm reroute makes sense, even with Leknes outside the worst weather

Leknes was not expected to be directly affected by the forecast storms. Ambassador Cruise Line has dropped the call anyway, and I’d back that decision. A port can be reachable without the rest of the voyage being safe.

The rest of the voyage is the reason Ambassador gave for removing five northern Norway calls from Ambition’s 17-night Land of Northern Lights cruise. It said the original schedule would have put the ship through the strongest conditions from Storms Austen and Boelo on its southbound journey to the UK.

The line cited forecasts of winds reaching 70 knots and swells of up to 7 metres. It has moved the calls farther south along Norway’s west coast, preserving the scheduled November 2 return to Bristol.

“Continuing with the original itinerary in these conditions would put our guests, our crew and the ship at risk,” Ambassador said in a Facebook update.

Five northern calls replaced

Ambition departed Bristol on October 16, 2026, with nine Norwegian port visits planned. Its October 23 call at Alta remains, but Hammerfest, Harstad, Leknes, Narvik and Bodo have been removed.

Ambassador has secured replacement berths at Andalsnes on October 26, Molde on October 27, Alesund on October 28, Bergen on October 29 and Stavanger on October 30. Alesund will be a second visit during the cruise.

The more southerly route allows Ambition to use sheltered harbors while the storms pass, leaving enough time to complete the voyage on schedule. Guests onboard have been informed of the changes and the reasons for them. Ambassador said it had monitored local forecasts and consulted the relevant port authorities before arranging the alternatives.

No warnings specifically for Norway related to either storm were in place when the changes were announced. Windy.com nevertheless forecast winds of 40–50 mph off Norway’s western coast on October 27. Those figures are distinct from the more severe forecasts cited by Ambassador, but the absence of a Norway-specific warning did not settle the concern about the ship’s subsequent route home.

A substantial loss for a northern lights cruise

The safety case is convincing. The replacement itinerary is also a significant downgrade for the stated purpose of this sailing. Moving farther south substantially reduces passengers’ chances of seeing the northern lights.

Aurora viewing was never guaranteed on the original route. Solar activity, weather and cloud cover would still have determined what guests could see. But an uncertain opportunity and a substantially reduced opportunity are not the same thing. I would not brush this off as an ordinary port shuffle.

Securing five alternative calls keeps this sailing from becoming a succession of cancelled ports. That is useful work. It cannot replace the northern latitude passengers booked, or the viewing prospects that came with it. Ambition’s next scheduled Land of Northern Lights departure to northern Norway is March 8, 2027.
