Adora Flora City 99% Complete Ahead of November Delivery
The May sea trial involved 937 engineering and technical personnel from 12 countries, with remaining work including surveys and crew equipment training.
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding has completed 99 percent of Adora Flora City and plans to deliver the vessel to Adora Cruises on Nov. 6. The ship will be the second large cruise vessel built domestically in China.
The project has reached final outfitting and acceptance after completing sea trials in May.
What remains before delivery
Interior areas are being transferred progressively to Adora Cruises, according to Wei Shengsheng, head of cruise ship programs at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. The remaining work includes system acceptance, class and statutory surveys, and crew training on the ship’s equipment.
“Our engineers and construction workers will complete the handover work of all systems and sections on board,” Wei said.
The May sea trial involved 937 engineering and technical personnel from 12 countries, who tested the ship’s systems. About 4,000 workers were aboard each day during the busiest period of construction, which began in August 2022.
How the new ship compares with Adora Magic City
Adora Flora City is 341 meters long with a beam of 37.2 meters and gross tonnage of about 141,900 GT. It is 17.4 meters longer than Adora Magic City, China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, and its gross tonnage is about 6,400 higher.
The new ship has 2,130 guest cabins, 19 more than its predecessor, and can carry as many as 5,232 passengers. Its public areas are also larger.
Domestic materials replace imported consumables
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp., worked with CSSC’s Luoyang Ship Material Research Institute to develop coating materials for the project. The joint team produced decorative coatings, flooring primer, adhesives and epoxy deck coatings for use during construction.
Wang Jingjing, a senior researcher at the institute, said the materials were designed for flame resistance. “They can resist aging despite frequent cleaning and withstand corrosion from various substances,” Wang said.
Wang said using the domestically developed materials reduced building costs and shortened supply times for consumables previously sourced from overseas.
Adora Cruises currently has two ships in active service, with Adora Flora City planned as its third. Once it enters service, the new vessel will use Guangzhou as its home port.
