Adora Cruises Marks National Day With Peking Opera Sailings
Adora Mediterranea’s “Peking Opera Sets Sail” program, created with the National Peking Opera Company, includes performances, lectures and mask-painting workshops.
Adora Cruises’ two ships celebrated China’s National Day on October 1 at sea during seven-day holiday sailings. Adora Magic City departed Shanghai, while Adora Mediterranea left Tianjin on the same day.
The Tianjin departure also carries a Peking Opera program. Adora Mediterranea is partnering with the National Peking Opera Company on the themed sailing, called “Peking Opera Sets Sail,” which combines stage performances with lectures and passenger workshops.
Passengers aboard Adora Magic City watched a drone show and fireworks at Wusongkou from the ship’s deck as the vessel departed Shanghai.
The holiday programming across both ships includes themed parties, singing sessions, quizzes about National Day and workshops focused on cultural heritage crafts. Passengers can also participate in a flag-raising ceremony at sea and offer wishes for the country.
Aboard Adora Mediterranea, the opera program includes “Farewell My Concubine,” “Picking Up the Jade Bracelet” and “Havoc in Heaven,” as well as “Selling Water” and “Sanchakou.” Other scheduled performances include “Hong Niang,” “Face Changing” and “Drunkenness.”
Lectures will introduce passengers to Peking Opera culture. The participatory program includes painting opera facial masks, making paper-cut designs inspired by Peking Opera and testing guests’ knowledge of the art form through quizzes.
The opera programming will also extend to Adora Mediterranea’s “Golden Nile” party. Peking Opera pop-up performances will be incorporated into the event’s ancient Egyptian theme.
Adora’s announcement did not include a statement from a named executive.
