State Dept Keeps Turks and Caicos at Level 2 for Grand Turk
The public port schedule lists roughly 350 to 400 cruise calls expected at Grand Turk in 2026, including sailings by Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean.
The U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisory for the Turks and Caicos Islands on July 7, keeping the Grand Turk cruise destination at Level 2 and telling visitors to exercise increased caution. The advisory cites high crime, hurricane exposure and strict local prohibitions on firearms and ammunition, including single rounds accidentally left in luggage.
For cruise passengers, the update applies to one of the Caribbean’s busy port-call destinations. Grand Turk Cruise Center handled more than 1 million passengers in 2025, is on track to do so again in 2026 and remains the only dedicated cruise port serving Turks and Caicos.
Advisory remains below reconsider-travel levels
Level 2 is the second step in the State Department’s four-level advisory system, above normal precautions and below Level 3, which urges travelers to reconsider travel, and Level 4, which says not to travel. Turks and Caicos has remained at Level 2 since 2023, though the risk factors cited in the advisory have changed over time.
The Department reviews Level 1 and Level 2 advisories at least every 12 months and can update any advisory sooner if conditions shift substantially. The July 7 update does not identify a specific cruise line, ship or shore-excursion operator.
Advisory flags petty theft and vendor scams
The advisory describes most crimes affecting foreign visitors as crimes of opportunity, including pickpocketing and purse snatching. Visitors are advised to use caution when walking or driving, especially at night, and not to resist if a robbery occurs.
The State Department also warns about overcharging and scams in tourism areas, including aggressive vendors who offer items as “free” before demanding payment.
Ammunition rules carry legal risk for travelers
The warning is specific about ammunition. “This includes single bullets and cartridges brought by mistake in carry-on bags or luggage,” the advisory says. A firearm license or permit issued in the U.S. or another country is not valid in Turks and Caicos.
Violations can lead to deportation, fines or imprisonment. Local law provides no tourist exception for firearms or ammunition, and since November 2022 at least eight American tourists have faced firearms prosecutions after ammunition was found in luggage.
Grand Turk schedule remains active
The public port schedule shows roughly 350 to 400 cruise calls expected across 2026. Brands listed for Grand Turk include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises, Holland America Line, Virgin Voyages, Cunard Line and Royal Caribbean.
No public statement from Turks and Caicos authorities has accompanied the July 7 update, after officials responded to a 2025 advisory by stressing destination safety and reinforcing the country’s firearms rules. The advisory also directs travelers to weather and natural-disaster guidance for Turks and Caicos as the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season continues through Nov. 30.
