Phoenix Reisen Buys Oceania’s Insignia for 2027 Alvara Debut
Alvara will be named in Hamburg on November 26, 2027, Phoenix Reisen’s 54th anniversary, during a four-day Oslo roundtrip rather than its maiden voyage.
Phoenix Reisen has bought Oceania Cruises’ 700-passenger Insignia, which will begin sailing for the German operator as Alvara in November 2027. The sale means the ship’s planned calls in Greece have been cancelled.
The acquisition will give the Bonn-based company a fourth ocean ship alongside Amadea, Amera and Artania. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Insignia is scheduled to enter Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven in September 2027 for modifications and repainting in Phoenix’s turquoise livery. The onboard work will adapt the vessel to the operator’s service and accommodation standards.
“It is exceptionally well-maintained, in excellent technical condition and is already equipped for shore power,” said Phoenix Reisen Managing Director Benjamin Krumpen.
Phoenix will use two existing partners to operate the vessel: BSM will provide ship management, while sea chefs will be responsible for hotel services.
The purchase follows the cancellation of Crescent Seas’ proposed long-term charter of Insignia. The residential cruise start-up had planned to take the vessel from late 2027.
Short cruises lead the Hamburg program
Online bookings open on October 23, 2026, with seven Hamburg roundtrips in the initial release. Alvara’s first departure is scheduled for November 11, 2027, on a five-day cruise calling at Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
A subsequent five-day English Channel sailing will visit Dover and Antwerp. Another five-day itinerary will call at Oslo and Gothenburg and transit the Kiel Canal.
The naming ceremony will take place in Hamburg on November 26, 2027, the 54th anniversary of Phoenix Reisen’s founding. In keeping with the company’s practice of separating the christening from the maiden voyage, the ceremony will accompany a later four-day sailing to Oslo and back.
The Advent schedule includes a five-day itinerary to Gothenburg, Copenhagen and Kiel, with a Kiel Canal transit. A weeklong English Channel cruise will visit Le Havre, Dover, Rotterdam and IJmuiden, followed by another seven-day sailing in mid-December calling at Bergen, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Oslo.
The inaugural program also includes a Christmas cruise and two longer Mediterranean voyages.
From R One to Alvara
The 30,277-gross-ton R-class vessel was built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, in 1998 as R One for Renaissance Cruises. It began sailing for Oceania as Insignia in 2003 and has a crew complement of about 400.
The ship previously operated for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises as Columbus 2 between 2012 and 2014 before returning to the Insignia name. Its major OceaniaNEXT refurbishment in late 2018 and early 2019 renewed cabins, public spaces, restaurants and other onboard facilities.
Further details of Alvara’s cruises are scheduled for publication in the Phoenix magazine on November 6, 2026. The company’s Seereisen 2028 catalog is due on December 18, 2026.
