Carnival Valor Briefly Lists on Mississippi River Near New Orleans
Carnival confirmed the list but did not corroborate passenger accounts of a powerless cargo vessel, and said medical assistance went to a few guests who requested it.
Carnival Valor briefly listed while transiting the Mississippi River early on August 17, 2026, after passengers said the ship made a hard starboard turn to avoid a disabled cargo vessel. Pool water washed across parts of the ship, but no serious injuries or damage were reported, and the vessel reached New Orleans on schedule.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the listing but did not corroborate passenger accounts involving a powerless cargo ship.
Passengers describe sudden turn
The incident occurred on the final night of a four-night Western Caribbean cruise as Carnival Valor returned to the Port of New Orleans. Passengers said the cargo ship was without power in the river and that the cruise ship turned sharply to avoid it, causing Carnival Valor to lean to its starboard side.
A passenger video posted on Facebook showed water from an upper-deck pool spreading across the deck as guests reacted to the ship’s movement. Other footage showed water entering an indoor dining area while passengers collected plates and personal items.
“We went from straight up to full list in about one second,” an anonymous passenger said, adding that nearby luggage carts “slammed against the wall.” Several passengers also said the absence of an immediate announcement from the bridge added to their anxiety.
“Vessel movements of this nature can occur during normal navigation, and the circumstances are being reviewed,” Carnival said. The cruise line said crew members responded immediately after pool water washed over part of the open deck. Medical assistance was offered and provided to a few guests who requested it.
Back underway on a working river
The ship returned upright and continued operating normally. Carnival Valor arrived in New Orleans at 8 a.m. CDT and departed at 3:30 p.m. for its next five-night Western Caribbean cruise, with calls scheduled at Cozumel and Progreso.
Built in 2004, Carnival Valor is a 952-foot ship of about 110,000 gross tons and accommodates 2,980 guests at double occupancy. On the Mississippi it transits a maintained deep-draft channel shared with commercial vessels and barge traffic.
The Lower Mississippi has no locks or dams, and navigation can be affected by strong currents around bends, changing shoaling and narrow sections of the channel. Carnival has not identified river conditions as a cause of the listing.
The cruise line has not said whether the crew assisted the reported cargo vessel or called for help on its behalf. Carnival also did not provide a timetable for completing its review.
