Volendam Welcomes Pitcairn Islanders Aboard During Rare Call
As cruise lines chase deeper, harder-to-reach itineraries, ships are becoming pop-up marketplaces and supply lifelines, turning rare calls into real community support.
Holland America Line’s Volendam hosted a delegation of 28 Pitcairn Island residents onboard during a rare call at one of the world’s most isolated inhabited communities in the South Pacific. The visit took place on day 46 of the ship’s 133-day Grand World Voyage, which departed Fort Lauderdale on January 4.
Pitcairn visit organized as an onboard cultural exchange
Pitcairn Island, home to a population of 38, sits about 1,350 miles east-southeast of Tahiti and is the only inhabited island in a group of four volcanic islands. With limited infrastructure for a typical passenger landing, Volendam guests did not go ashore, and the call was structured around bringing the community to the ship instead.
Led by Pitcairn’s mayor, the 28 residents met with passengers to discuss day-to-day life in an extremely remote location. Island families also brought handcrafted items made by local residents, giving guests an opportunity to buy goods directly from the community.
Provision support tied to Pitcairn’s limited resupply schedule
The ship’s call also included practical support for the island. Pitcairn receives supply ships only about four times each year, a schedule that affects access to fresh food and other essentials.
Hotel General Manager Florin Dragomir coordinated a donation of fresh provisions for the community, including milk, meat, and eggs, timed to coincide with the visit and arranged in consultation with the island’s leadership.
Crew shore visit and a plaque exchange marked the call
While passengers remained onboard, a small group of Volendam team members was invited ashore, an opportunity the ship planned to use to bring back first-hand observations to share with guests and fellow crew members.
The visit also included a formal commemorative moment: Volendam Captain Rens van Eerten exchanged plaques with Pitcairn’s mayor to mark the occasion.
Earlier in the voyage, Volendam opened Recife’s 2026 cruise calls
Earlier this month, Volendam docked in Recife, becoming the first ship to visit the Brazilian port in 2026. The call on January 15 brought more than 900 guests into the city, where passengers were welcomed with a cultural reception featuring traditional frevo music, a handicraft fair, and local beverage tastings.
Recife Port Managing Director Paulo Nery said the broader cruise season has already delivered significant foot traffic to the port. “All this activity has a direct impact on our economy, tourism, job creation, and the visibility of our state,” Nery said, adding that the port is prepared to receive vessels “with efficiency and pride.”
According to Nery, more than 7,000 visitors, including guests and crew members, have already visited the port this cruise season. Port officials also expect the 2026 season to welcome more than 20,000 visitors overall.
- Ships already seen this season: Recife has hosted calls from operators including Silversea, Costa Cruises, Viking, and P&O Cruises, according to the port’s season overview.
- More calls ahead before April: The port expects 10 additional ships before the season ends in April, with upcoming visits including AIDAmar, Phoenix Reisen’s Artania, and Seven Seas Splendor.
How the Pitcairn and Recife calls fit into the 133-day itinerary
Built in 1999, Volendam is sailing a 133-day Grand World Voyage that includes more than 51 destinations across 23 countries and five continents, before returning to Fort Lauderdale in mid-May. In addition to Pitcairn and Recife, the schedule includes further South American calls, with planned visits including Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
