Virgin Voyages Adds Astronauts to 2026 Solar Eclipse Cruises
It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, with totality crossing northern Spain and waters east of the Balearic Islands.
Virgin Voyages has detailed the onboard and shoreside programming for two August 2026 Solar Eclipse Voyages aboard Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady, adding NASA astronauts, astrophysicists, commercial spaceflight figures and science communicators to the sailings. The cruises, part of the line’s Marvelous Voyages collection, are timed around the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse and will operate in northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999. The path of totality will cross western Iceland, the North Atlantic, northern Spain and the Mediterranean east of the Balearic Islands.
“We’re selling the two minutes the sky goes dark over the ocean, next to the people who’ve actually been up there,” said Nathan Rosenberg, chief brand experience, marketing and momentum officer at Virgin Voyages.
Two routes built around eclipse viewing
Valiant Lady will operate Solar Eclipse: Iceland & British Isles from Aug. 5 to 20, sailing round trip from Portsmouth with calls at Dublin, Glasgow, Liverpool, Belfast, Siglufjordur, Isafjordur, Reykjavik and Edinburgh. The 15-night itinerary places the adult-only ship in northern waters during the eclipse period.
Scarlet Lady will sail Solar Eclipse: Barcelona to Rome from Aug. 10 to 22, calling at Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Cannes, Ajaccio, Tuscany/Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast and Catania before ending in Rome. Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady are part of Virgin’s four-ship Lady-class fleet.
Astronaut talks onboard, observatories ashore
The onboard program includes astronaut talks on life in orbit, a Virgin Galactic Q&A with Will Whitehorn and Virgin Galactic astronauts, a solar physics session on totality and safe viewing, and an eclipse photography class covering phone-based shots of the corona, Baily’s beads and the diamond ring effect. Virgin also plans a dharma teaching and energy session timed to the eclipse.
Virgin’s Shore Things program for the sailings includes an Armagh Observatory visit and cider tasting in Belfast, a Genova Caves excursion in Mallorca, yoga and a sound bath at Jardines de Palermo in Ibiza, and an Isafjordur coastal drive along the Troll Peninsula ending with a geothermal swim.
Other lines are selling the eclipse too
Other operators and travel sellers have promoted eclipse sailings on ships including Princess Cruises’ Enchanted Princess and Sun Princess, Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, Celebrity Apex, Ambassador’s Ambition, Fred. Olsen’s Balmoral and AE Expeditions’ Sylvia Earle through New Scientist Discovery Tours. Some solar eclipse sailings from Saga Cruises and Holland America Line have sold out.
Kevin Currie, director of New Scientist Discovery Tours, said ships can be useful eclipse platforms because they can monitor weather and move if needed. He said viewing from deck also gives guests “adequate space.” It avoids buildings, mountains and other land-based obstructions.
Eight sailings, three ways to watch totality
Virgin’s broader Marvelous Voyages collection includes eight summer 2026 sailings ranging from eight to 16 nights, spread across Valiant Lady, Scarlet Lady and Brilliant Lady. Beyond the two eclipse voyages, the collection includes itineraries tied to destinations such as the Panama Canal, Istanbul, Santorini, Morocco, the Emerald Isles and the Scottish Highlands.
During totality, Virgin plans to divide eclipse viewing into three onboard formats: silent watch areas, zones with a live musical score and spaces with real-time expert narration as the sky darkens.
