Norwegian Jewel Guest Dies While Snorkeling in Bermuda

After she began having difficulty near Ely's Harbour, other passengers and her son brought her to a nearby beach, where lifesaving measures continued until emergency medical services arrived.

A 76-year-old American guest from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jewel died in Bermuda after becoming unresponsive while snorkeling near Ely’s Harbour in Sandys Parish on Sunday, June 14. Bermuda Police Service said foul play is not suspected and attributed the death to a pre-existing medical condition.

Police said officers were called at about 11 a.m. after visitors from the ship were swimming in the area and the woman began having difficulty. Other passengers and her son brought her to a nearby beach, where lifesaving measures continued until emergency medical services arrived.

EMS personnel took over at the scene and transported the woman by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by an emergency-room doctor shortly afterward. The woman was not publicly identified.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the guest “became unresponsive while snorkelling in Bermuda” and that the coast guard responded to provide immediate assistance. “Unfortunately, the guest was unable to be revived,” the line said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.”

Ely’s Harbour is on Bermuda’s west coast in Sandys Parish, between the northwestern tip of the main island and the southern end of Somerset Island. The harbor is sheltered by islands at its mouth and connects at its eastern end to the Great Sound through the narrow channel below Somerset Bridge.
