Deutschland Starts Final Summer Season for Phoenix Reisen

The farewell underscores how chartered classic ships are becoming harder to sustain, even for operators with loyal German-speaking audiences.

The 520-passenger Deutschland has opened its final summer program for Phoenix Reisen after an April drydock and renaming from World Odyssey, beginning an eight-cruise farewell deployment from Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven and Kiel. The ship is operating eight- to 22-night itineraries through Northern Europe, Iceland, the Baltic and the British Isles before exiting the German operator’s seasonal fleet in early September 2026.

The deployment closes a Phoenix Reisen role that began in 2015 and follows the company’s decision not to renew the charter agreement for the 22,496-GT vessel. Deutschland will not return for Phoenix’s 2027 summer season, leaving Artania, Amera and Amadea as the operator’s year-round ocean ships.

Eight cruises from three German ports

The season began May 12 from Bremerhaven with a 16-night cruise to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The itinerary includes 13 destinations, among them Edinburgh, Belfast, Douglas, Portland and Dover.

The longest cruise in the program is a 22-night sailing from Cuxhaven to the Portuguese archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. That cruise is scheduled to call at Ponta Delgada, Praia da Vitoria and Velas, with overnight stays in Horta and Funchal, and also includes Northern European and British Isles ports such as Glengariff and Honfleur.

The final Phoenix season follows a spring world cruise for Semester at Sea, after which the vessel entered drydock in Germany in mid-April for livery work and the return to its Deutschland name. Outside its Phoenix deployment, the ship sails as World Odyssey for Semester at Sea, serving as the program’s floating campus for multi-country study abroad voyages.

A dual-role ship built in Kiel

Originally built for Peter Deilmann in 1998 at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel, the ship is about 175 meters long with a 23-meter beam and carries roughly 290 crew. Its capacity varies by operating role, with Phoenix marketing the vessel at 520 passengers.

The ship’s annual changeover between Semester at Sea and Phoenix Reisen has made the name and livery switch part of its operating pattern. After the final Phoenix sailing, Deutschland is scheduled to be renamed World Odyssey again before beginning another winter program for Semester at Sea.

Semester at Sea is scheduled to use World Odyssey for two world voyages during the 2026-27 winter season. The ship’s next employment has not been announced.
